Description: Libertine in Freemans Bay, is anything but conformist. Housed in what is arguably one of the most dramatically beautiful parts of Victoria Park Market, the building has a 100-year history that started as a power station. Being incredibly sympathetic to the building's history has clearly been important to the new residents; design details like raising some of the floor area have connected the space seamlessly to its outdoor surroundings. A play on a term used to describe a person devoid of moral restraints and who values physical pleasures, the Libertine offers what it describes as "sinfully good, free-thinking food and drink" in inspired surroundings.

We decided to take advantage of a GrabOne deal at this restaurant which proved very worthwhile for the $$ spent. Two cocktails, two starters, two mains and two desserts for only $75.00 and the good thing was we were going to Auckland for a few days and booked the restaurant for New Years Eve. They were more than happy to accept the voucher and the service was excellent, casual but friendly and helpful. Good choice of food and all tasted good, hardest choice was what to pick for dessert.

We stumbled on this restaurant walking from the Auckland CBD to Ponsonby and are very glad we gave it a chance. The decor is very up to date - modern, clean, airy and full of 20 and 30 something metrosexuals. But not stuffy or pretentious like many "hipper than thou" places in our hometown of LA. Tapas style dishes allow you to try many different tastes. We did about 8 between the two of us and didn't get any clunkers. They all look as good as they taste. Good, friendly service as well.

Ate at Libertine last night and had a great time. We shared Kasava chips, buttermilk calamari, paella, jerk chicken bites, fish tacos, creme brûlée and cheese board. All plates were good, and some very good. Fish tacos were delicious in particular with the lime aioli, and the paella was great. Chicken bites needed more spice perhaps and Kasava chips were just ok. Good Emerson pilsner and nice atmosphere. Poor server was running the entire room on her own but she never seemed stressed. Great night out.

Really enjoyed the food, wine and atmosphere at Libertine. Glad we booked in advance though because on a Thursday evening it was booked out. We ordered 6 small plates to share amongst the 2 of us and we loved each one and left pleasantly full. 2 bars add to the atmosphere as it prevents one from getting over crowded & uncomfortable. Definitely will be returning.

I didn't know what to expect at Libertine, but decided to book ten of us in as their 'Restaurant Month' offer seemed to good to pass up. I'm so glad we did in the end and all ten of us left with great impressions of the place. Warm, warehouse feel interior, excellent food, great wine & drinks list and a nice atmosphere. The table service was the only slight let down; perhaps this place isn't the type to be too concerned about smiles and watering the diners? To make up for it, the food was superb; great comments about the steak, ceviche, tacos, calamari, beetroot salad, rockpool seafood and pork cheeks.
Between the City Works Depot and the Victoria Park area, the identity as a diner's destination is beginning to pick up. I hope Libertine can continue to be a place we'll pick to go to pay full price, not just a place to go when there's a special priced menu promotion.
