Description: Libertine in Freemans Bay, is anything but conformist. Housed in what is arguably one of the most dramatically beautiful parts of Victoria Park Market, the building has a 100-year history that started as a power station. Being incredibly sympathetic to the building's history has clearly been important to the new residents; design details like raising some of the floor area have connected the space seamlessly to its outdoor surroundings. A play on a term used to describe a person devoid of moral restraints and who values physical pleasures, the Libertine offers what it describes as "sinfully good, free-thinking food and drink" in inspired surroundings.

Went there on a rainy sunday night, really nice decor and have a nice ambient. The food was pretty good and service was speedy. Would definitely go back there for drinks again.

We went with a group of 12 so had low expectations of the service. The place itself is great, very well done out - super 'cool'. The service was OK - long waits to get served at the bar and difficulty getting heard over the loud band that was on.

The food was mediocre. Both courses took ages to arrive and one main was forgotten.

Good place to go for a drink but not recommended for food unless you go when it's quiet.

A small group of us visited Libertine for dinner when it first opened and we were very impressed with the decor and the meals. We had not booked, so had a drink at the bar while waiting for a table. I loved the fact that it was busy and there was loads of atmosphere. The meals were beautifully presented and the wait staff were attentive. We did wait a while for our meals, but have no complaints about the quality of the food and because we hadn't booked, and it was a busy Friday night, I don't think it was an unreasonable wait.

I really wanted to love Libertine. It has all the elements of a great place - good food, friendly staff, beautiful ambience and delicious cocktails with a big sunny deck great for summer drinks.

I just can't. After 3 strikes, I'm out and won't be back. The first, meals took almost 2 hours to arrive. They've just opened we thought, at least the food was good. We got a sorry voucher and decided to give it another try based upon the belief that they'd 'get it right' the next time. Not so.

Visit 2, the wait was almost the same. It wasn't busy until 45 minutes after waiting for our meal a big fancy dress cocktail party entered. Fast forward 90 minutes later and our food finally arrived. Eyes glazed over and stomachs canabilising themselves, we were told that a cocktail party have come in around the time we ordered and the kitchen was busy catering for that hence the crazy delay. Surely with a group event like that, they would have labour planned - not so.

You may ask why we returned - well memories fade and you want a hip, cool neighbourhood bar to do well so it seemed like the right move, but alas disappointment again. This time there was no excuse. Our waiters constant 5 minutes away lost its gloss after 1/2 hour. Another 90 minute + wait.

Sorry Libertine but sort out your kitchen times if you want to get repeat business. The food is good but not that good. There are plenty other choices around that wouldn't accept wait times like this for their valued customers. I'm sure the only reason that there are not other reviews on here about this issue you have is people have wasted enough time waiting for their meals to write a trip advisor review. It's a shared view - 'nice place, terrible wait'.

this is a wonderful addition to Freemans Bay, Auckland. Once there was only La Zeppa, Didas and The Drake...now there is the wonderful Libertine (love the name too) We sat out on the deck because it was a glorious evening but inside looked inviting especially as the sun went down. I enjoyed their ribs and tacos as sharing plates. Must return to try paella, rotisserie chicken and snapper.
