On a clear day, of which Auckland has plenty, a boat ride on the Hauraki Gulf is a lovely experience, especially if you can top it with lunch at one of the wonderful wineries on Waiheke Island. Looking back over the waters onto the Auckland skyline while sipping a glass of wine is a captivating must-do.

Auckland's Hauraki Gulf is a brilliant place for a range of activities. Fishing is marvellous in the Gulf during summer with good snapper available within 1km of Downtown Auckland. It is great area to go sailing or boating as there are plenty of places to stop and shelter. There are also many beaches to explore. If you do not have access to your own boat then would recommend that you try a trip to Waiheke (if want to eat, drink and relax) or Rangitoto (if want a good walk) or on one of the dolphin watching or sailing boats that goes around the Gulf.

There's something about the gulf that draws you in especially if you are in a boat. For example on the ferry to Waiheke. Several islands in the gulf make it interesting; each with their own history. Take a trip on one of the Americas cup yachts or a ferry to Rangitoto or Waiheke and sit back with a glass of wine, soaking in the atmosphere. Sunset is particularly special.

Good value. Something I have always wanted to do.
Im from Taupo thats why I just had to explore what Auckland has to offer. It was not a long trip but great views of Auckland and Rangitoto island as we passed.

it's a boaties paradise, even if you're not a boatie. Dotted with islands (some well worth visits in their own right, including the fabulous Waiheke) and surrounding NZ's largest city... whether it's by private charter or simply on a commuter ferry, it's a must do for visitors. I know few areas in the world that are quite such as stunning and safe waters, so close to any country's biggest city.
