There are many walking tracks in the Waitakere Ranges and some are better than others. It can be quite soggy in the winter months so late spring or early summer is a good time to visit. You do need transport to get here because there aren't any buses that go out this far. The visitor centre is a good starting point if you want to know about the walks and area because the DOC staff are very helpful.

There are hundreds of hikes to do here and a great hiking map with track numbers and codes you can buy. However some tracks are better than others.... and the people at the visitor information centre in the Ranges should be able to help with that information. The only trick is getting there... you need your own transport.

Every person I have taken there, and hiked with, and there have been a lot, have be awestruck and really pleased about the nature and experience in the middle of Auckland.

A simply amazing place to visit if you ever get to Auckland!! Whether sight-seeing or for a day tramp the Waitakere Ranges are worth a visiting. The Waitakere Ranges offer a wide variety of bush walks ranging from easy to intermediate & difficult. Journeying through second generation bush amongst the once Kauri clad ranges these are some of the best ramblers tracks in the Southern Hemisphere.

On a hot day there is nothing more cooling than to walk the Waitakere tracks through the Punga & mature Kauri or Totara trees, across lively streams through light dapples ferns.

To get accustomed to the unique flora of the Waitakere Ranges walk the track opposite the Waitakere Rangers Station where everything is labelled. No snakes here but many glow worms if you care to walk the tracks after dark. Spectacular Fairy Falls where the water drops from high into a water hole worth a dip. Timeless, ancient, mysterious and alluring.

i will say dont miss this place when you visit auckland!

Feeling fed up with the Americas Cup race fiasco - we took off to Huia ti take some scenic pics (I like to paint them). Took the Huia Road from Titirangi past the little Huia Bay Store, and marvelled at the stunning water views and the new spring lambs in the lush fields of the coastal farmland. Up the winding hill, just past the Whatipu turnoff we discovered a wonderful walk which took us to the highest point with the most amazing view to the Manukau Headlands and on the other side to Auckand City. On the way home, totally indulged in an excellent coffee and scrumptious home made cake at the Huia Store. Absolutely recommend this as a refreshing break. P.S. The ARC have a wonderful old cottage on the waterfront where you can stay overnight for a small amount of $. Phone the Arataki Centre on Scenic Drive to book.

It was a rainy day which made it all the better for me. The smell of the trees and the atmosphere is great. Plenty of info and things to buy and lots of walking tracks...
