This is an area that is quite often forgotten. It has several well known short and long hiking tracks for everyone to enjoy. Recommend you try the Sir Edmund Hillary Trail. Great views

Saw beautiful waterfalls along a couple of short hikes, black sand beaches and beautiful overlooks of the ocean and it's close to the city!

One of the first hikes I did was in the Waitakere Ranges during my 5 month residence of Auckland. It was absolutely beautiful, and a great first taste of the amazing scenery and natural life in that breathtaking country. Highly recommended! It's a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life in Auckland as well.

This forest is a true gem and very beautiful. Lots of birds, varied vegetation and the beautiful black volcanic sands. The isolation of the area is is both a good and a bad thing, since while really beautiful, it's hard to get there yourself unless you have a rental car and then still you will probably not know where to go. But there are some tours you can do around Auckland, which I will review separately. Definitely a great place to visit.

Located in the west of the city, the Waitakere ranges is a true gem. Although you have to take a taxi or drive there yourself (there are very few buses that go there), it is a place not to be missed. One advice that I would give to people is to stick to the path and go with a group of people. This is where tourists come to in order to stave off boredom.
