From the end of Glenesk Road, Piha ( turn right at the bottom of Piha Road hill)Take the kitekite waterfall track which runs for about half an our beside bubbling stream to a beautiful waterfall and waterhole or a walk on the beach exhilerating - coffee at the local cafe or store. Watch the surfies and the sunset - try the Piha RSA for dinner - a real local treat. Then there is Cornwallis Beach if you are with the kids and want safe swimming - follow the Huia Road from Titirangi roundabout (after having a great lunch at the many cafes). Further on from Cornwallis is the Huia Store - great for an icecream stop and a walk in the nearby rainforest. Or check out the local museum. So much to do and not enough space.

I have spent many, many hours hiking through parts of the Waitakere Ranges over a lot of years. Wonderful stands of Kauri's, and other native trees with lots of birdlife. If you like hiking well worth taking the time out to explore. Anything from 30 minutes to 6 hour hikes.

For those not able to get out into the Real NZ Wilderness, this at least gives you a taste. Hike for a couple of hours or even overnight, and don't miss the awesome west coast beaches as well.

The Waitakere ranges covers a big are, in includes bush, beach mountains. Start at the visitors centre, for great views, try Piha, for a black sand surf beach. The Huia area, for amazing clean and quiet beaches. Stop at Titirangi for a coffee or snack in on of the funky cafes. Lots of bush walks, fishing, swimming or just enjoying the peace. A great place i don't really want to share. Try it on your own, easy to get there. I grew up in this are & always plan a visit when I return to NZ
