Unfortunately this hotel started off on a sour note for me. The Choice website has a best online rate guarantee, however they refused to honour the cheaper price offered by Agoda ($50 less for three nights). This may have been because the Agoda price was sans breakfast and the Choice was not. However there was no offer to give me the discounted rate with the same conditions and instead I was emailed a blanket denial of the clearly lower rate advertised elsewhere. It's not terrible surprising (it would have cost them $50 and a free night) but offering something and then refusing to deliver is simply not good business. The worse thing though was that this dishonesty tainted the stay from the onset. I nonetheless tried to tackle my time at the Econolodge positively and disregarded the corporate ring around.

Check in was quick and efficient, though the staff weren't particularly polite or welcoming. However, the next day, when we were seeking directions to the zoo, the man on reception couldn't have been kinder or more helpful. All subsequent staff I came into contact with were likewise friendly, talkative and kind.

The room we stayed in (a double) was clean but very basic, dated and dreary. For $63 a night, however, it was hardly the worst budget room I've ever stayed in. It had most of things you expect to find: a small tv with free to air channels, a reasonably comfortable bed, tea and coffee facilities and a very basic, dated and clinical bathroom. It was lacking free wi-fi, which is always an annoyance in today's internet reliant world. I dislike having to pay exorbitant prices for basis access ($10 per day) so I used the local Starbucks instead.

The location is without fault. Right in the centre of the CBD, just off Queens Street, with everything you could want or need just a quick walk away. This central spot made touring the highlights of Auckland a breeze.

Unfortunately this is also a bit of a negative. The walls and windows are paper thin. Anything happening outside reverberates as though occurring next door. And if you're unlucky enough to have night owl neighbours, as we did, prepare to be awoken at 3am by the sound of them doing anything and everything in their attached rooms.

Overall a very mixed bag. Definitely not great but not terrible either. If all you're after is very basic (just a notch above typical hostel style fare) then this place is for you. If not, seek alternate accommodation.

Location and convenience are two big factors for staying here; it's right next to Sky City and as low as $79 for a room. The lobby is decent and reception is friendly. The room feels like a hostel; the queen bed takes up nearly the entire room. Clean enough though. If you just need a place to crash its perfect.

It depends what you want as to whether this hotel will suit you. The location is great next door to sky tower but the room was very noisy. The hotel is a great price but fairly basic. The room was very clean but very small. Some staff were helpful and some were not. On balance I would stay again.

Stayed in a spacious balcony room with a sofa.

This place is in a great location that's walking distance to the major shopping districts/streets in Auckland.

The bed was two single's pushed together which was a bit annoying - however manageable.

Parking is across the road at the Atrium carpark at Crowne Plaza which was convenient.

Didn't try their food or anything - there's plenty of restaurants/fast food for choice anyway.

For the price you pay you shouldn't expect the latest and greatest, the decor is a little dated but if you don't care for that stuff and just want a central place to stay that isn't a backpackers you should definitely give this place a go.

Room Tip: I got the balcony room which overlooks one of the streets, it can be a little noisy though due to how close it is to the main street.

Perfect. In fact better. I was attending a conference; I could have afforded 5 star. But location, and to use my Flybuys, persuaded me. Well next time forget 5 star, if I am on my own, without wife, I will be back. Room: small (of course), but spotless. Restaurant for breakfast, perfect, cannot be faulted. Parking arrangement with Crowne Plaza, brilliant. But as usual, the staff are most important. They get 12 out of 10. Hey I have no connection to this place; but I scored top top staff, even the housekeeping guy in the lift at 8am, and then the Indian gentleman who doubled as an IT specialist on my laptop. Take a bow everyone and I will be recommending you big time. Thank you. Ed Franklin Harcourts Real Estate

Room Tip: Room was spotless but I can't get the dots to activate
