“Luxury wrapped in a homely enviornment!”
Reviewed June 10, 2010

I decided to take my mother to a luxury retreat for the weekend as a 'Mothers Day' gift and we both had a fantastic time with Gloria as our hostess who gave us a tour of Cotter House as well as a historical account of how the house became what it is today and the amazing in-house art collection which is just stunning! Gloria made us feel right at home and as we sat by the open fire place she served us a fabolous high tea using the traditional silver ware followed by champagne and canapes which were simply divine!

We stayed in the Blue Provencale room which was lovely and we both woke up well rested especially my mother who said it was the best nights sleep she had experienced in ages! We then went downstairs to our dining room where we were served breakfast which was all handmade by Gloria! We had fresh fruit from her garden and museli as well as croissants and then french toast followed by eggs done in a mexican style all of which was absolutley delicious!

I would higly recommend this property to anyone wanting to get away and have a break or to those of you who want to be in the heart of the city but still have some privacy this in the ideal venue.

We chose Cotter House on the basis of its luxurious reputation, central location, heritage character and environmental rating (an important aspect for the discerning traveller). We are a family with 3 young children and were made to feel very welcome - Gloria, the gracious and warm hostess, set up a wonderful “play and family” room for us in her gorgeous ballroom, ideal for our children to run around and play during wet and dry weather. The property is gated and offers great protection to the swimming pool area, removing any concerns for our toddler. We loved the location, next to a library and restaurants, with private parking and handy to the city.

Overall, we found this retreat works very well and would recommend it strongly for families. It has wonderful facilities including access to a gym and swimming pool (suitable for children). We enjoyed the complimentary kickboxing, pilates and yoga classes. But the highlight was the delightful food and in particular the outstanding breakfasts. There is also room for a nanny.

Dear reader....
We cannot even describe this house. Luxsory wherever you look, and a sense of calmness and wellbeing.
Antiqe woodcarved statues, beautiful paintins, smell of home made biscuits and tea served in shining silver tea sets.
But.... The most important thing in the house is not a thing..... GLORIA.....
Gloria, the owner of the house is much more than the runner of the house. She is a beautiful, nice mother who'll letterary look after you whenewer you ask her.
She is a perfect Spanish, French and English speaker. If you might need information abut New Zeland and Auckland she'll be much better than any other information center.
Than.... If you're interested in art and antiquity, she'll be the art epert , experter than anyone else in New Zeland....
Contact directly www.cotterhouse.com and book right now you wont be disappointed!

We stayed at the Cotter House with great expectations. The inn is coined as a luxury retreat but it was not what I had in mind. The inn keeper was very gracious and was there to please. Gloria wants to make your stay a great experience and trys very hard.

If you're looking for a hands off stay with a bit of privacy this is not the place for you. We returned from an afternoon out to find our belonging put away into drawers and cabinets. We had intentionally left things out for easy access and asked they not be "stashed away."

The overall cleanliness of the inn was average and the amenities acceptable. The linens were changed every few days and the towels daily upon request. The towels and robes may have been plush in their younger years but were worn and tattered for our stay.

We stayed in the bronze suite and were pleased our infant daughter would have her own room. Unfortunately we found it difficult to control the temperature in her room. The house is old and the windows rattle and shake if the wind blows. The bathroom is quite drafty as well. The rooms felt a touch crowded with furniture, antiques, and tea sets.

The food was ok but the pan au chocolate were to die for. Definately the high light of our stay.

Overall we were disappointed with our stay. We did not find good value in the nightly rate. The house was cold and noisy. When we were in our room you could here the televisions in the other room along with any conversations that were taking place.

Staying at Cotter House is like stepping into the luxury of a past era. The decor is sophisticated with a European touch. The artworks and collection of antiques pleasing to the art lover or collector whilst offering the intimacy of a family home. The food is outstanding and offers a breakfast on a level of lavishness we have never before experienced. There are a range of services available at Cotter House and your special needs can be catered for. The management leaves no stone unturned to offer you a pampered and memorable stay. It is a huge surprise to discover this haven of sophistication in a quiet location so close to the centre of the city.-C.C.

On my way to Australia I had the pleasure and privilage of staying at Cotter House, recommended to me by a friend. It is a beautiful old house, superbly maintained, excellent service and the food was out of this world. It is very personal and one feels pampered from the time one arrives till the departure. Gloria Poupard goes above and beyond to help in any way possible to make your stay unforgettable and any help you may need with anything she finds the solution..

  • Liked — Excellent taste, beautiful furniture, very comfortable, excellent food and service
  • Disliked — tiny swimming pool but beautiful surroundings so it wasn't problematic as I didn't want to swim.

Whist searching for holiday inspiration, I was delighted to see that you feature Cotter House as part of your hotels of choice- what a great place, and I will always remember Auckland and New Zealand for that reason. We stayed there last year as part of a family holiday and the level of service and attention to detail were out of this world. We took the bronze suite which is very large and beautifully furnishe. The marble bathroom is superb and the towels are nice and fluffy!
We were welcomed to our rooms with lovely fresh fuit and a complimentary afternoon tea- all served in gleaming silver and fine china- and ate so much we had to take a late dinner booking downtown.
What makes this hotel so different from other places is that it is very small and so feels intimate and cozy. The decor is inviting, fascinating and incredibly stylish. The owner is a woman who has travelled the world and who has collected art all along. She is also an amazing cook. ALthough we did not opt for the dinner option, breakfasts at cotterhouse were superb. The muesli was homemade (everything is organic), and the menu varied from day to day- from smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with beautiful hollandaise to homemade pastries and cakes (the lemon tarts are divine) and anything you liked, really.
The location is very handy for central Auckland and the owner is very knowlegeable when it comes to recommending sight-seeing trips and tours. We went on to the Bay of Islands from Auckland and then came back for a couple of nights on our way to the Waitomo caves and Lake Taupo. I wish we had stayed at Cotter House then as the hotel we booked turned out to be expensive for what we got.
I missed out (due to lack of time) on a facial and massage (the owner organises these for you on request) but I did go to a couple of yoga and pilates classes (free for guests at the time, I don't know if they still do this). These were excellent and it felt good to be looking after myself on holiday. We could have stayed so much longer, it was truly enchanting.
