“Grand Chancellor Auckland”
Reviewed May 22, 2013

Stayed there on a Friday night recently. Stayed in room 213 (from memory). Room is fairly spacious, and clean and tidy. Hotel and room are one of those that are sort of past their "use by date" but overall still good to stay at. The hotel is on the cornier of two very busy streets so you're unlikely to get a quite night in bed - we didn't! The telly was a 19" computer monitor type thing!!

Staff were OK, but I have experienced better.

I guess when you go here you get what you pay for. Rates are very reasonable and if this is in your price range then I wouldn't recommend against a stay here. Certainly very central in Auckland, so you can walk at most places.

Just an average hotel, however you get what you pay for. Stayed 3 nights as I had a conference at the Sky City Centre. The Grand Chancellor is just a short walk from there and was about a third cheaper in price so was fine for just me. It was ok and did the trick but you wouldn't write home about it. Was a bit noisy. Didn't really bother me - but if my light-sleeping wife had been with me she would have had issues. Took a while booking in - but these things happen. The shower is'nt the greatest and in fact the last day there was no hot water. Room is ok, however TV is really small (although I don't book Hotel rooms to watch TV). Location is great as was the price - so it really is a case of "you get what you pay for". If you're just looking for somewhere cheap to stay with a great location - it's fine. There's nothing that I would complain about, just as there's nothing that has any 'wow' factor.

Having stayed in other Grand Chancellors, I had quite high expectations. We stayed here on three nights, a Monday, then Wed&Thuesday. On Monday we were asked to leave our cares in the Campari which the valet parked eventually (2 hours later). Our room was not in a particularly good shape and our balcony overlooked the Forecourt and scaffolding - not the harbour views I read about when we booked. It seems that only the first seven floors are reserved for guests, the rest are for permanent residents - which is fine, but they are not honest about it.

After returning on Wednesday I was told I had to park the car myself, for the same price ($30 per night), but after driving through the scary car park which it's poorly designed walls, I requested they parked it for me, which they grudgingly did. This time we were on the first floor, just above the forecourt again. The television was incredibly small and a big distance from the bed and arm chairs (only place you could watch television. The best way to describe the layout of the room would be an irregular 5 sided polygon, which was narrow around the bed and kitchen.

During the two day stay, only one lift was working due to scheduled maintenance. You would think that during school holidays, management might have considered selecting a different time for repairs, but apparently not.

The best thing about this location was its proximity to other restaurants and attractions, including the amazing food hall which we visited on Thursday night. The worst was being treated with contempt by many of the staff every time we wanted to access our car (once a day) or wanted to check in or out. Very disappointing!

Stayed two times in two weeks, got a great deal, staff were very pleasant and check in prompt, clean and quiet. City is so close. Tv was very small and temperature hard to regulate in the room. Would definately stay again.

Booked close to the Viaduct as we had an engagement at Swashbuckles so it was great to be able to walk to and back again.
Our room was facing the viaduct size was okay
The shower facilities certainly let it down. The shower is over the bath with a curtain, shower has lots of pressure the water went every where and it does feel very claustrophobic when you are in the shower.
It would appear they havve minimal staff and check out took 20 mins just to gte the car key back.

Would definitley return if we needed to be central Auckland again.

Hotel rooms are a little tired so you do get what you pay for but the price was right, the room was clean and the location was central. The TV was pretty tiny and the room (supposedly a suite!) wasn't big but it certainly met my needs.

Stayed on a saturday night, when CBD is usually noisy. This hotel was pretty quiet.

Room was a bit tired and smelled a little like it hadnt been used for a while. Otherwise fine.

I'd stay there again.
