“a wonderful ferry ride”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2013

the half-hour ferry ride puts you on this very young volcanic island. there are hiking trails up to the top of the dormant volcano, and there are some bird sightings. But truth be told, there are better hiking and birding destinations within an hour of Auckland. Enjoy the ferry ride.

“Rangitoto island- a great half day trip from Auckland by ferry.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2013 via mobile

It only costs $28 (less if you use a 10% discount voucher from tourist book) to catch the ferry across to Rangitoto Island and have a great couple of hours walking. Get the 915 am over, hike and get the 12.45pm back to Auckland. You can clearly see the volcanic cone as you approach the island and take the main summit track to get fabulous 360 degree views.About 50 minutes up & a little less coming down. Do the 15 minutes crater rim circuit while you are at the summit as well. Old WW2 fortifications and bird life. Unfortunately due to the drought the pohutakawa forest was not flowering this year but the island must be fabulous when it does. The black scoria rocks from the lava flows are amazing.Worth the trip.

“Good hike and climb”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

My friend and I did this climb up the volcano and enjoyed the experience. Took a ferry over to the unihabited island and climbed to the top of the volcano for some great views of Auckland. Took a couple of hours to get up there and back. Some parts are steep but overall not too difficult. Recommended.

“Views forever”

You can either walk to the top or take a bus sort of thing. But however you get there, the view is breathtaking. You can see literally for miles and miles.

“Hiker's destination and photographer's dream”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 21, 2013

My daughter and I were looking for a day trip as a distraction from Auckland City. Rangitoto seemed to fit the bill. There was no fee to enter the island, but the ferry expense was approximately 35 NZD for 1 adult and 1 child. After an approximately 25 minute ferry ride from Auckland's Ferry Building, we arrived at Rangitoto. The lower elevations were not particularly interesting, but after a couple hundred meters of ascending the mountain, we understood the dormant volcano's draw - the views from the island were breathtaking and the lush bush was beautiful. Wear closed-toed shoes (volcanic rock is sharp) that provide as much slip resistance as possible. In order to trek all the way to the summit, you need to have a reasonable degree of fitness. There are shorter tracks for all, though. Ultimately, If you enjoy hiking or landscape photography, set aside at least half a day and take a trip to Rangitoto.
