My wife and I visited here on a rainy morning in jan.
We took the 10.30am ferry and used some 10% off coupons from some of the many free tourist leaflets.
The ferry ride was enjoyable in itself and took about 25 minutes.
We walked directly up the main path to the summit and it took just under an hour. You get pretty warm and it gets steeper further along but it is a well maintained path and not too difficult.
Views from the top were great. We then went a long way round to the caves which were fun to poke around in. A torch would be handy but you can do some without.
No shops of any kind so take enough food and water.
We got the 3.30pm ferry back and this was plenty of time there overall we felt. Do it!

Rangitoto is so beautiful, the air seems to zing with natural life. That feeling of being completely off the grid was amazing. Stunning views from the volcanic cone, and the option of walking or using their 'train'- or a combination of the two.

We loved this trip. The ferry was great and our children (ages 6 and 9) had a wonderful time hiking up to the summit. We even stopped in Devonport on the way back for dinner. MUST DO family trip!

A true icon of Auckland and is a great way to spend the weekend if you live in Auckland or visit it anytime if you've come here on a holiday. Stop sometimes to see the plant life and the birds enjoying their own sanctuary. Ferries are limited though, which is my only negative, so come early and leave on the last ferry. Climb to the top and you can see some very unique views. Worth every second on Rangitoto. Travleling on foot is an amazing marvel, highly reccommended but if you like there is a volcanic explorer train which comes at a small cost. Recommended to anyone around the Auckland area.

Fun even getting there. Me and my friend ran the whole way up, you're puffed but boy, the view pays off. Lava caves were interesting and the area at the top was cool. Great family time.
