“Stunning escape from the rat race!”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

Rangitoto is so beautiful, the air seems to zing with natural life. That feeling of being completely off the grid was amazing. Stunning views from the volcanic cone, and the option of walking or using their 'train'- or a combination of the two.

“Great family fun!”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

We loved this trip. The ferry was great and our children (ages 6 and 9) had a wonderful time hiking up to the summit. We even stopped in Devonport on the way back for dinner. MUST DO family trip!

“An Amazing View”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

A true icon of Auckland and is a great way to spend the weekend if you live in Auckland or visit it anytime if you've come here on a holiday. Stop sometimes to see the plant life and the birds enjoying their own sanctuary. Ferries are limited though, which is my only negative, so come early and leave on the last ferry. Climb to the top and you can see some very unique views. Worth every second on Rangitoto. Travleling on foot is an amazing marvel, highly reccommended but if you like there is a volcanic explorer train which comes at a small cost. Recommended to anyone around the Auckland area.

“Great walk”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

Fun even getting there. Me and my friend ran the whole way up, you're puffed but boy, the view pays off. Lava caves were interesting and the area at the top was cool. Great family time.

“Rangitoto Island - Auckland”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

Rangitoto Island is reachable via a Fullers Ferry from either Auckland Ferry Building or Devonport wharf. You pay for the ferry and optional ride up to near the crater, but no fee to enter the island.
It is interesting to be walking on a volcano and see the lava rock flows and subsequent regeneration of plants.
We went on a cloudy day which meant that it wasn't too hot climbing up. The walk to the top takes about an hour and you'll need strong walking shoes OR you can take the truck ride up.
The view of Auckland is expansive. Take the 15 min crater walk for a clearer 360 degree look.
You will need to pack a picnic lunch and take bottled water with you. The ferry has drinks and nibbles.
There are toilet facilities by the wharf but they are the only ones I saw.
Walking through some of the bush you could forget that you are inAuckland city, it s so peaceful and the bush and birds are lovely. In December and January the pohutukawa trees are flowering so its a mass of red!

The tracks are not suitable for a stroller or wheelchair but if you wanted a short island visit you could stay near the wharfs and if the tide is high there is a tidal swimming pool. The tide was out the day we visited so couldn't test it out.

A really enjoyable day out with my husband and two teenagers.
