“Our world trip started at your beautiful B&B”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2006

Dear Bart and Terese,

Emily and natalie here - not sure if you remember us, but we started out on our 5 months round the world trip, at your beautiful B&B back in april. since we left you, we drove through New Zealand (folowing your recommendations!) and we both were utterly moved by the country and the people that we came across. What an amazing place - no wonder you moved there!!!!

We headed off to australia and travelled down the east coast, where we cruised around the whitsunday islands for 3 nights and hopped on and of of coaches for the rest of the journey - which ended in Brisbane.

We then arrived in Bangkok - what a culture shock!! but fantastic none the less! we spent 2 and a half months in total island hopping around thailand and then we ended our trip inBali, where we spent three weeks o the beach relaxing and preparing ourselves for the jurney home!!!

We just wanted to write to say how grateful we were of your hospitality, you really helped our journey start off with flying colours!!! we will never forget arriving in the comfort of your beautiful home, after that 26 hour flight!!!

Thank you once again

Warm regards

Emily Horwood and Natalie Horwood

Highly recommended!
An ideal place to explore the many fine restaurants of Parnell and within easy walking distance also of Auckland's fascinating museum, The Domain.
The hosts, Bart and Therese, really care about their guests and nothing is too much trouble. This included a personal guide of One Tree Hill on the drive from the airport!

We were met at the airport by Bart himself in a lovely merc and driven back to their very smart home.
Views from the balcony towards Auckland harbour are stunning.Bedrooms are luxurious with free internet access available at all times in the lounge.
Breakfasts are excellent and varied with a certain Belgian twist. Our gluten free diet request was well catered for.
This is not the cheapest b&b we had during our stay in New Zealand but a wonderful start to our holiday.

My husband and I just got back from a spectacular trip driving up and down all of New Zealand. We were there for 3 weeks and really needed more time but we made the best of it. Our first stop and overnight stay was in Auckland and we stayed with Ascot Parnell. This is a comfortable contemporary home with 3 large guest rooms. We requested the Harbor view room, but only the garden view room was available for the time period we requested. I was pleasantly surprised, but this was actually a 2-room, 3 if you include the bathroom, which by the way was beautifully remodeled just recently, accommodation. We had a separate bedroom and a sitting room. All was tastefully decorated. The sitting room had a nice comfy couch, books and a CD player. Perfect for relaxing. We were offered chocolates and biscuits in our sitting room for the afternoon and evening.

The shared space has a large open living room and dining area that leads you out to a balcony with an awsome view of the city. The shared space also has a large open kitchen where Bart, our host, cooks a delicious breafast each morning (ordered from a cute little menu) for his guests. This kitchen is available to the guests for little snacks, (cookies & biscuits) and drinks, (coffee ,tea and juice, etc).
There was also internet access available for the guests free of charge.

Ascot Parnell was centrally located and walking distance to everything in town. It was our first day and we didn't want to do too much driving yet, not accustomed to the left side of the road thing. There was free underground parking and a security-swiper for the elevator use. Attention to detail was not missed here. Bart and Therese were wonderful hosts and very informative. They helped us make a couple of reservations for our inter-island ferry ride for which we didn't know we needed reservations for, but because it was during holiday time, it was probably wiser. All the little details add up to alot. We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely come back.

We had a wonderful time at Ascot Parnell. Bart and Therese were friendly welcoming hosts who took exceptional care of us. They recommended restaurants and activities and arranged transport for us (and got us a great rental car rate, too!). The house is lovely with fabulous views and we had fun with their beautiful dog, Calipha. The breakfasts were hearty and excellent. We were treated like family members from the moment we arrived. Thanks so much Bart and Therese! We'll definitely be back.

Dear Bart and Therese and to whom it may concern

Again, thanks so much for the BEST B&B stay that we have ever experienced! Our accommodations and Bart's cuisine and charm are unmatched; Therese's service and kindness as well as her warmth is unparalleled. We tell anyone, who will listen, that the Ascot was our best lifetime experience that we have yet enjoyed---from the repair of our wet clothing to Bart's rants about the "socialistic" government and the 15% surcharges----which, by the way, are a crock!! I've never heard of such a thing: surcharging folks for partaking in services on Sundays and holidays! We, in the US, are bad but that practice makes us pale by comparison. (Be sure to copy my sentiments on to whomever, Bart.)

We ran into Ginny and Debra many times on the cruise-ship. It was so good to meet them at your place. The informality and warmth of it all made it possible. They were even there to cheer me on as I participated in the "Princess Idol" contest. I sang a song.

Our trip to the Bay of Island was OK but, alas, the accommodations at the Duke were perhaps the worst at which we have stayed---quite possibly undeserving of even a single star: not even tissue in the room, nor washcloths, thin towels, and just an experience suggesting that the guest is being "milked" before they raze the whole damn building. The dining experience, though, was worth a couple of stars; as the deck is well utilized to enhance the restaurant experience. I tell you all this just in case a future guest should ask. Tell them not to be overwhelmed by the "historical significance" of the Duke of Marlborough---it truely is UNDERwhelming at best.

Our weather throughout the trip and cruise was quite nasty, rain and dreary throughout with exception of Melbourne. We did not sit out by the ship's pool once. We especially loved Christchurch, however, and the beautiful fjords. When we return to NZ, we will spend some time in Christchurch as well as Auckland. The "Te Papa" museum in Wellington was a definite highlight. I could have used another 4-5 hours there.

If you ever plan on citing references for your lovely Inn, feel free to use our names. Things could not have been better!

We hope to see you when you visit the US and the SF Bay Area. Please contact us on that occasion.

Regards and Thank you for your kindnesses and charm. I only wish I had more time to banter with Bart!

Kevin and Marianne Smith

Exceptionally helpful couple running a very modern, contemporary B&B in Auckland's best neighborhood. [They've moved from the old house mentioned in older reviews] The breakfast menu is innovative and broad, the rooms are really suites, and the view of the city and harbor is outstanding. Definitely would return! Book early as they fill up.
