Victoria Park Village (formerly Victoria Park Market)

Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The old market precinct has been replaced by an urban village - come and walk through the historically protected buildings and experience part of the Auckland heritage - grab a coffee from one of the cafes and wander the shops in this small urban village. After years of development the precinct is just starting to come alive with a mix of artisan workshop stores, galleries and shops left from the old market that used to be on this site. Restaurants and food outlets make this area popular with the locals who work and live in the immediate area. The area that now makes up Victoria Park Village was once the local rubbish collection area. The horses would lead the carts around the old City Centre collecting the rubbish - the rubbish was then delivered to Victoria Park Village, burnt in the old chimney and the power generated from this would power the city street lights. On site you can still see the chimney, sorting area and the old stables. a ramp that was previously used to get the horses up to the second floor of the stables is now the Celebrity Walk where a number of icon Kiwis have left their hand and foot prints. The horses have long since "bolted" from the stables and in their place a thriving community of artisans are setting up in eateries, workshops, shops and galleries.

“hardly anything there”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

Lots and lots of empty shops and nothing much else but a few random places selling perfumes and jewellery. Two coffee shops and a NZ souvenir shop. We took the bus from town to get there but was a bit disappointed to see so little there. Saw the celebrity walk which was a big concrete path going to nothing which was a bit random but at least something different to see. Such a shame as could be so nice there. :(

“The Revamp looks Great”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

Stopped off at the Buttermilk Cafe for breakfast - excellent food, service and atmosphere and we will definately return. There are several other cafes and restaurants, so we are looking forward to giving them a try! Had a good look around the revamped market, not quite finished yet, but very soon will be. Even with empty shops we felt that there is going to be a great atmostphere here, very cosy and well planned. Hopefully on our next visit we can give this review and excellent!

“Don't waste your time”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

According to the website it reopened Feb 2013 and 85% of shops now let, what utter BS. About half a dozen shops open, not at all like the old Markets, just more like any other mall type place. Complete and utter waste of time. Website hype doesn't in any reflect what is actually available there at moment.

“Restoration well done at a cost”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

The renovation of the buildings has been well done but if you visited the market before the work, you may be as disappointed as we were today.
There is still a lot of space to be occupied and the market buzz has gone. Now it is "up market" in shop units . Some cafes that feel sterile and more a business workers lunch venue!
Not really a market now and a long way to go before being a lively area to shop in.
The multi story car park was almost entirely reserved parking and very tight for a larger vehicle.Going by bus would be easier.
