I love Auckland Domain, with its Victorian elegance, sweeping garden vistas, quaint band rotunda and huge, leafy trees. The Moreton Bay Figs are my favourite. Take stale bread (wholegrain) with you to feed the ducks in the duckpond - an enduring childhood memory of mine, which I repeated with my own children. Perfect venue for shady walks in Summer, lots of joggers and exercisers about, but just as many strollers. On many a Summer's day, you'll see cricketers at play on the cricket pitch, or office workers playing touch rugby after work.
The Wintergarden is the epitome of genteel elegance and there are lots of places that make perfect backgrounds for photos. I had a family portrait shot here once, and I often see brides being photographed here.
At the centre of the Domain sits the historic Auckland Museum, which houses arguably the finest Pacifica collection in the world. It certainly provides unparalleled access to Maori history and artifacts. Highly recommended that you time your visit to include the Maori performance, a very professional, educational and enjoyable experience - it gave me goosebumps and made me feel proud of my Maori heritage.
Also in the Domain is a nice wee sculpture garden, full of classic sculptures. Worth a stroll through.
You can't come to Auckland without spending at least an hour or two in Auckland Domain, soaking up the grace and serenity of this expansive public space.
Take a picnic.
