The bed was large and comfortable. The bathroom clean. But it is an old hotel that has had a coat of paint. However, it is in a great location with a good range of bars, restaurants and sites with in easy walking distance.

We stayed at Mercure a few months ago and had a great sea view room (one of the larger corner rooms with two beds). Unfortunately this time we were placed in one of the normal rooms which, whilst it still had a great sea view, was so much smaller it felt almost claustrophobic! It didn't help that the door into the adjoining room took up valuable wall space, forcing the bed to be pushed into a corner so that one person was up against the wall with no side table.
The decor is a little tired and the lifts are a little scarily old (a number of the floor buttons don't work), but the convenient location to central Auckland made it our choice for accommodation. Plus the bar on the top floor is a great place for an afternoon cocktail!
I wouldn't recommend taking your car if you can help it, as the parking fees are ridiculously high.
One complaint - our TV remote was not working so we tried to ring Reception to discuss a replacement. We rang and rang and rang and... We rang periodically over a 30 min period, letting the phone ring for minutes at a time. Eventually I went down to Reception to find the cause for the lack of response via phone - Reception were busy checking in a bus load of tourists. Whilst I can understand that they were busy, someone should be available to answer the phone for the in-house guests who need assistance! Even worse, when I went back to our room, my partner pointed out to me that the 'numbers to call' list had Reception listed as the emergency number to call!!! What would have happened had a tourist, unsure what the emergency number in NZ is, been calling Reception with no pick up for over half an hour???!!! Imagine the despair if your partner had collapsed with a heart attack, and you are ringing and ringing and ringing the listed emergency number, and there is no answer??!!
That said, it's a reasonable place to stay when you have something on in the city.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room as they tend to be larger, and in particular, ask for one of the upper floors...

This was our second stay here. Using our free night through the Accor Club but paying for the second on a package deal was ok. We stayed on the 10th floor, our room was just ok. The staff were very friendly as was the lady showing us to a table at breakfast on both days. The parking fee for each night was a bit extreme. Very handy to everything around us. The room we had the first time round was a nice size with a lounge but not this time. Still we would stay again as this is our first year in the club.
