“Great location - excellent price”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2013

After travelling from Brisbane, My wife and I stayed here when our flight from Auckland to New Plymouth was cancelled. We have stayed here several times when we visited Auckland. We will be staying again in January 2014. The Hotel offers great facilities & spacious rooms at great prices. Location is ideal within walking distance of waterfront eateries and attractions in the Auckland CBD. There is a great bar on the 14th Floor with views of the Harbour. The restaurant offers great views but had a limited Menu. The choices did not provide much in the way of basic meals. Addition of a plain chicken dish, a chicken pasta dish and a plain steak dish would be a great improvement on the current menu.

Stayed here last night in a harbour view room for $260. Expected a really nice room with a nice view. Instead we got a small room which is in dire need of a makeover, and a view of the harbour through two sets of glass and extremely dirty curtains. Just didn't feel like a $260 room. Shower was nice and hot though and nice shower gel, although would've been nice to have some moisturiser as well.

The hotel is located right next to the Auckland ferry terminals and in the heart of the city, next to the train station. Very convenient if you need to be close to town. I didn't try room service or dining but I have been told it's typical business hotel type fare.

The decor, of which much comment has been made, is dated and needs change. The colour scheme - faded blue and yellows - screams 1990, and there are significant scuff marks on the walls from suitcases being dragged etc. The carpet in my room - 1014 - had clearly been changed at some point because it was ill-fitting and did not have any underlay, so I could feel the uneven floor concrete as I walked around. The shower mixer needed fiddling to get a usable temperature (not scalding) but was set well above 55c and would burn if you weren't careful. Low pressure as well like most hotels.

I got some minor tv noise from the other rooms at night but nothing major, and the bin men clearing at 5am echoing around the area just can't be helped - but it wasn't masked out from the windows either.

The bed was 2 singles zipped together and the one closest to the window obviously had collapsed springs as it sagged in the middle - the other bed was fine. Sheets were very clean though and the pillows did not smell of previous guests heads.

I didn't expect luxury, and no other alternative was available as Microsoft nz was running its annual TechEd show in Auckland which ties up all hotel rooms for the week. Location is the key attractor basically.

Service on the desk was fine and all of the staff (French/Russian/polish) spoke great English and were very efficient in their work - no complaints.

The reception was under staffed
The shower pressure was pitiful
Cold water tap wouldn't shut off completely
Bathroom decor was tired and worn and needed repairs
Only valet parking for the car ... Never let them park your car, we did and it came back with a large scratch on the front wing which I didn't notice til the next day and it cost $40 per night for the privilege!
It is supposed to be 4 star but should be reassessed
