We stayed in the Deluxe King Spa room (#515) just last night. Thought I'd divide this review up by the good/bad/ugly. Here we go!

Good:
1) The hotel can be booked via the Entertainment Book, providing savings and a really easy booking.

2) The hotel does not charge any credit card fees, which are becoming more and more popular at hotels now.

3) Location was close enough to Queen street, but still on a quiet(ish) pretty tree-lined street.

4) Also within easy walking distance to/from the airport bus.

5) Deluxe King Spa room is quite spacious, and includes a table, a loveseat, a King bed w/two nightstands, wardrobe (w/2 robes), desk area, kitchenette complete with sink, stove and microwave and a washing machine.

Bad:
1) The reception employees are incredibly slow and/or inefficient. Checking in/out took ages, and any time there were more than 2 people in line ahead of us at the desk, we easily waited 10-15 minutes.

2) There are no safes in the rooms. The info book in the room stated that personal items in your room are left there "at your own risk", and that safety deposit boxes are available at the front desk. After a long wait, we discovered the box is long and thin - and would not fit one ipad, nevermind 2 of them. Forget securing a laptop. In the end, they did put our items in the hotel safe, but that is not ideal.

3) The bed was ok, but just for one night. If my husband wanted to sleep anywhere near me, though, the mattress would put me in a diagonal position (i.e. it sagged in the middle). And he is skinny!

4) An alarm clock was not provided. Perhaps this is a new thing that hotels don't provide? In any case, bring your own alarm (i.e. phone etc) or ask for a wakeup call.

5) The room comes with a lovely spa bath, but it doubles as the shower too. The showerhead is very close to the wall, and coupled with the deep slope of the tub, makes it very difficult to actually get under the water. There was a constant fear of slipping!

6) The wall between the shower/tub and the bedroom opens up with a shutter. The shutter is not attached to the opening on the top or bottom - just the edge, so it doesn't really stay in place. Very little privacy when going to the toilet! (But nice if you want to watch a movie while taking a bath).

7) The hairdryer is in a drawer in the desk area under the TV. It is plugged into the wall there, and cannot be moved. The bathroom only has a plug for shavers, anyway!

The ugly:

1) There is no extraction fan in the bathroom that is controllable. I did see a vent above the shower, but it doesn't help 'clear the air' (if you know what I mean). Bring some air freshener!

2) All of the Deluxe King Spa rooms face the park behind the hotel. I thought this was lovely until I asked if the park was safe to walk through at night. The gentleman checking us in said "uh..yeah, until midnight. Then it gets rowdy.". Rowdy, you say? "Yeah, with all the teenagers partying." O-K...and the noise...will we hear it in our room? "You should be fine." We were, but only because we turned on the mondo air conditioning unit in the room. Couldn't hear anything over that!

Also note there appears to be a creche just behind the hotel as well.

3) The doors are paper thin, and voices carry down the hallways. Ask to stay away from the elevator.

4) Coming back to the hotel around 11pm last night, we heard some VERY loud music and partying. Turns out it was *in* the hotel - the function room, perhaps? I feel bad for anyone who was staying anywhere near that room.

We didn't eat in the restaurant, use the pool or the internet. Overall, the room was useful, but we'll look for another place to stay next time we go to a show in Auckland.

Room Tip: Stay away from the elevator, and be weary of overlooking the park during weekends or school holidays...

Thank you for review and recent stay at Amora Hotel Auckland, your feedback is important to us and will assist us in improving our guest experience.

You have stayed with us during an extremely busy period with the hotel at 100%, the service you have received however is well below the minimum standards we set and your comments have been taken on-board with particular focus on peak check in/check out periods.

Thank you for your comments with regard to our spa room. I ensure you that all our bathrooms has an extraction fan, I am at loss to why your was not working. Its automatically switched on when the lights come on.

I do apologise that we do not have safes in the room. This building was built originally for private apartment living, when the hotel took over, there was no space for us to slot a safe in the rooms. This may also explain why there is no plugs for hair dryers in the bathrooms.

The compendium in the rooms clealy states on how you can arrange for a wake up call.

I will also discuss your review with our Concierge and Front Desk Teams in an effort to improve further, In summary we are genuinely sorry you did not enjoy your experience and thank you once again for your feedback.

My husband and I are regulars to Auckland for the theatre and arts....we often stay in hotels through Grab One and Wotif, we decided at the last minute to pop up to Auckland as a family member had passed away and needed a cheer up! We noticed a 'deal' with the Amora Hotel, that was quite frankly incredible, great room with spa bath, 2 course dinner with wine! free carparking...all for $155...i was a little nervous but booked for two nights. to my amazement we found this hidden gem...what a fabulous location, our room looked over Myers Park, without the traffic noice of towntown! the check-in was just wonderful...not once were we made to feel that we were on a 'deal' which is often the case. Our room was fab..even had a washing machine!!! all the amentities, lovely new robes and everything you could want...for an incredible price! I was gobsmacked, how do they do it? Again, i thought ok the food will be real basic, but no again amazed, werent made to feel anything other than a welcomed guest, the staff are just so accommodating...there is a french polynesian woman there who was superb, we were a little late and there was nothing she would not do for us without intrusion, the food was simply lovely.

This is a small boutique hotel in the heart of Auckland, where if visited regularly as we shall be doing, the staff i am sure will welcome your return...and no cost for carparking....i felt a little guilty when i left....surely it had to be double the price!

the wifi is a little outdated, but again in this day and age...everything is reinvented within no time, and i only had to pop downstairs, and was given a card and a warm acknowledgement from the front office staff...who even offered to send an expert up to help me!!! No-one for this price could ever be offended with anything.....i just loved it...and probably i shouldnt be writing this to tell the world!!! Go you must, you wont be dissapointed.....

Room Tip: over looking the park, where you can hear birds and children playing from the balcony

The Amora Hotel is situated right by Myers Park in Auckland and very close to the main shopping area in Queen's Street. There is a good restaurant within but just up the road there are plenty of cheap and cheerful eating places going towards Grafton Bridge. That area is a bit 'hip' but colourful noetheless. The rooms are very clean and the service is good. It is possible to negotiate free wi-fi connection, with a smile!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the park side for a quieter time and a better view.

We found this hotel was very central being and few minutes walk to queen st. It has underground parking which is sometimes included in the room rate. The rooms were large and reasonably quiet. We were given one overlooking the park and that was quiet. The rooms are a little dated but very comfortable Breakfast was very nice .we didn't dine at the hotel. We would stay again.

We booked a special deal and got free parking and late check out!
Room was pretty well appointed, with nice views (small kitchenette, and even a washing machine!)

Hotel has seen better days though
Our bathroom could do with a small mechanical upgrade (but was fine)
And our sheets were quite worn (but clean)

Overall pretty good value option, if you get a nice deal

We stayed here in October. The grounds and views are spectacular. The food was delicious. Service couldn't have been better and our room was very nice. The rooms were quite large and very comfortable. I imagine staying in warmer weather would be even more fun as they have many activities to do.
