YHA Auckland International
Reviewed July 27, 2012 via mobile

This is a typical YHA: it has well equipped, spacious kitchens, good food storage, a large communal area, laundry (expensive) etc. The beds were really comfy and the duvets lovely. It does, however feel tired and in need of some renovation, and the building was freezing.

There are not enough showers and toilets for the number of rooms and those that there are are located by the main stairwell which is a fair distance from rooms located at the other end of the wing / coridoor.

We had an issue whilst there which was that we had a leak through the ceiling into our room. It was from the toilet above and looked like wee. This wouldn't have mattered had it not been for the fact that someone had been into our room and obviously noticed it be ause they'd placed our bin under it to catch the drops. However, they'd not informed anyone of this, so by the time we'd discovered it, it was night time and we'd just put the kids to bed. We then had to drag them out of bed to move rooms, and we ended up in less good rooms with much hassle. This was because the hostel were placing people who had asked for a dorm in dorms alone rather than filling up the dorms one by one. This when at night we needed a 4 bed dorm and a double it was a problem. The girl who sorted everything out for us was lovely and really helpful.

The hotel is fine, well located near the centre, clean with helpful staff. We had a double room which was comfortable and clean. The general facilities are good and, considering it's central location, overall is good value.

There are also limited car park spaces, which in fact was the deciding factor for us to choose this venue. If you need one, make sure you book it!

We have been associated with YHA for many years and appreciate it's more conservative character with a standard you can pretty well depend on.

On this particular night we were unlucky in that there was a big overseas rugby group from Asia in. They weren't unpleasant, quite the contrary, but oh dear, the noise at night!

We had a room full of boys/young men next door who were exuberant and very noisy, the walls are thin and it was like being in the same room. In fact we did finally politely ask them to quieten down and to their great credit there was not a sound thereafter.

But outside the traffic was noisy, there were people shouting (presumably the smokos), and continual loud banter. The corridors were noisy and by 10.30pm it was like trying to sleep through Dante's inferno! It tailed off in the early hours but still throughout the night the street noises were intrusive. Sign of the times I guess.

It was a last minute booking as our flight had been postponed to the next day due to adverse weather so we thought we might have a meal in central Auckland. Sadly, Queen street is now a tatty and shabby affair. The recent facelift and Nikau palms have added nothing. It feels run down and other NZ cities put it in the shade. Admittedly, there are some nice places to visit around Auckland and around it's centre, but the centre itself is grotty.

Room Tip: Don't have one facing the roadway!

Stayed at the YHA International for more than 8 nights in total. The rooms are a good size and well cleaned (compared to other hostels in New Zealand). Same for the showers, I never had to wait and they always looked clean and well maintenanced. Make sure you ask a room on the second floor, the first floor is less ventilated and therefore a little smelly around the bathroom area.

Matressess and beds were uncomfortable. After a couple of nights I got a pain in my back by the poor quality of the beds, so I asked to move to another dorm. This arranged immediately and with a smile, service is good, but didn't solve the problem. Next bed I got was a disaster as well.

Kitchen area is nice, spacious and well equipped. Some of the stoves weren't working but there was still enough room for everybody to cook. Try to avoid rush hour and cook before 6 or after 8. Because the kitchen area has a 'glass' wall it can become very hot during the day. Therefore not a nice place to hang around too long, work on the internet or whatsoever. But there is always room to sit and it's clean. You can't put your coolbag in the fridge, because they take loads of space. The good thing about that is that there is now plenty of room in the fridge. Bad thing is that there is small amounts of food, bottles, cans etc unorganized in the fridge and it makes it really messy.

Wifi worked the first couple of days pretty well, but later that week it started having trouble. Not very reliable, but there is a (cheaper) internetcafe just around the corner.

Hostel is located on a 10 minutes walk to the city center. Therefore it is nice and quiet at night and there is hardly any street noise, which is a plus. Good supermarket is on 15 minutes walk, but there is also an asian supermarket right next to the hostel with enough choice for a descent meal.

Helpful staff at the reception and traveldesk, laundry area is fine and provides free soap, good working elevator for those who can't walk the stairs. Overall a pretty good hostel.

This is a pretty average hostel. Good location (uphill from downtown), helpful staff, spacious kitchen, good place if you like to cook on your travels. Rooms could be cleaner! This is an expensive city, and you know it if you stay here in a private room--about 100 dollars for a somewhat dirty and stuffy room. Please wash the duvets more than once a year. Why so overpriced? Okay for one or two nights only.

I stayed here for 3 nights over a weekend in Auckland. The location is ok, about 10 minutes walk from the bus station. The price was excellent.

Facilities were ok, the showers and bathrooms were average and the 6 bed dorm I was in was quite cramped.

The wifi speed was terribly slow.

I was staying there more than one week. The service personal is very very friendly and helpfully. But I have to say that the room are not the best, for example sometimes you have a safe which is not safe, and a bed which is very loud if you are moving.

We stayed in a double ensuite. The location of the hostel for the city is great. Our room had very little ventilation. The bathroom could not dry during the day, which meant is was very smelly.
