Spent an afternoon exploring the museum and war memorial. Started by attending the Maori cultural show, this went for about 30 minutes but was very well worth attending. Starting with their welcome song through the use of weapons and finishing with a hair raising haka. After this we could have followed a tour through the museum but chose to wander as we wished. Finishing several hours later with a drink from the cafe before heading to the shop. The high light would have been the Maori songs and dance.

We two friends both had fathers who served in the Pacific in WW2, so we were attracted by the war memorial aspect of the museum. Once there, we found more things to like, including a lot of realistic displays about ANZAC and other WW2 experiences of the time. There was a reference center where we could ask specific questions about the war. Plenty of other things to see, too, and we ran out of time before we ran out of interest.

This splendid Museum is located on a hill, overlooking quiet a large lower land. There are friendly staff and volunteer workers to help the visitors. It seems to be a travel back in time. There collected or copied the ancient stuff their ancestors used, massive collections to see while walking from one pavilion to another. I especially enjoyed the old-time classroom when the Westerners started schools. Also some skeletons of pre-historic creatures. No time to close my eyes. Intersting stuff come in sight one after another. I admire that the New Zealanders never spare any efforts to build up as complete a background of their own nation as possible.

There is so much to see here, you can't do it all in one trip. Lovely views from the top of the hill, although freezing in the winter wind! Good place to spend a few hours on a wet day, especially as the exhibitions keep changing, so there's always something new to see. If you live in Auckland, take a proof of your address, so you get in free. Although we always donate some gold coins as it's well worth it.

We only spent time in the Maori Galleries as there was so much to see. We caught a glimpse of some of the other displays on our way to the Cafe, but with time limited, we went back to see more of the Maori Galleries. The " taonga" displayed cover every aspect of their lives and are very diverse and plentiful. The quality of the displays are unbelievable and truly awe inspiring. Their carvings on the war canoes and other artifacts are very intricate and beautiful. Take a break after a while to just sit and take it all in as it can all be very overwhelming. We also stayed to watch the cultural performance which is more of a demonstration than a "performance" and as such was informative as well as entertaining. Not to be missed as part of a day at the museum. The Cafe food asnd coffee was excellent by the way.
