“Wonderful hotel”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

The Langham is first class in every respect. The rooms, particularly the executive suites and larger, are spacious and have lots of extra amenities like a Nespresso machine. The club floor lounge is elegant and the food and drink is delicious. Definitely worth staying "club class" at the Langham. About the only disappointment is the location. You can hike to the Auckland Museum in about 20+ minutes, but everything else is a cab ride away (the shopping, the wharf, the top restaurants, the nightlife). The Hotel runs a shuttle to the shopping district every hour, however. We had a very comfortable stay and would definitely return when we are next in Auckland.

Room Tip: The Club Floor amenities are definitely worth it.

Like so many hotels of faded grandeur that you come across in big cities, The Langham is the same. It promises much from the grand reception area but the rooms are dated and a bit tatty. The bathroom in particular had cheap fittings and a tatty shower curtain.

The reception staff were slow and rather aloof/rude.

We did visit the pool area, which was OK but there weren't enough loungers so really we just went out, spent a while in the jacuzzi and then went back to our rooms. Oh and one other thing - the hotel website promised an "infinity pool". It's not an infinity pool. It's just a pool (a minor detail but worth pointing out nonetheless!)

This was also one of the few hotels we stayed at in NZ in three weeks where you had to pay for wifi.

We only spent two nights in Auckland during our three-week stay and we stayed in SkyCity on the other one. SkyCity was cheaper, more modern, better value (including free wifi) and more welcoming. We didn't expect it to be that way round as we expected so much from the Langham and very little from SkyCity so my tip would be to stay there!

This hotel just oozes charm. The rooms are elegant, the ambience is wonderful and there are lots of little touches that are often absent in other hotels. This is matched and probably surpassed by the warmth and friendliness of the staff. It's not easy to make people feel genuinely welcome, but they do.(We stayed at the Langham twice on this trip, once in December 2013 and again in January 2014, and looking forward to coming back.)

I stayed with my 7 year old daughter in November. She is a huge music fan and knows lots of her faves have stayed here. I had much email communication with the hotel before arriving and requested an early check in. we had an early start the first morning so the chance to shower etc or have a rest would have been awesome.
While I appreciate this is subject to availability I was hopeful.
We were impressed upon arrival. The walk down into the hotel is attractive and the "older" (so sorry) doorman was a delight! He was so friendly to my daughter! Unfortunately he finished at 2pm on our first day so we didnt get to see him again as he was on days off.
The entrance is magnificient - lovely flowers, chandeliers. Much olde worlde charm.

Regrettably our room was not ready and unlike some reviewers we were not offered a room, entrance to lounge etc. This would have made a world of difference to a very tired child!. Instead our bags were stored and we were left to our own devices.
What a shame such a huge hotel could not offer anything to us for a rest!

I must express huge thanks to Holly to amused my daughter while I was going through the check in process!

Holly is a huge asset to the langham.

So we headed out after a lovely discussion with the doorman

We came back well after 2pm and appeared that the room might not still be ready. There was a bit of wait until we were told it was. WE had been upgraded too which was lovely.

Enter Stephanie. Again a huge asset to the Langham.
She told us to our room, showing us around and explaining every thing to us

Inside the room she pointed out the features , reiterated the complimentary products and amused said daughter by showing her how to use the icemachine down the hall!
Our bags were already in our room which was great
I had been expecting a package to be waiting for me. It did take a bit of to-ing and fro-ing to find this but eventually it turned up. Thanks again Stephanie!

we were then given a platter of fruit and some nice cold mineral water. Just what we needed. That is a lovely touch.
The rooms were a decent size. Good tv, nice big wardrobe, chairs, tables. Plenty of plugs, Great touch having the power adaptor! Rooms a bit dark and dated but more olde worlde than dated dated
The swimming pool and spa area is lovely. The weather was warm but the fact that the pool is heated helped as it was still a tad chilly for me to be swimming!

The signing in to the pool seemed a bit odd

The facilities were beautiful. Lovely clean lots of towels. Great sauna steam room ice baths. and the snal shower was lovely

The lockers were a bit unreliable so this should probably be looked at.

We had used the shuttle. This is a great asset as the walk to downtown (where we needed to be mostly) is just a bit far for my girl to comfortablly walk.. It is quite a steep hill back up!

The shuttle drivers are lovely!

we had tea at the Italian restaurant just across the road and were very impressive. It was lovely food and reasonable priced.

the turn down service is a lovely treat. The first night my daughter got chocolate, water and bed turned down - with slippers and a prayer mat?

I got nothing :(

The second night we both got the service.

The bathroom amenities were lovely too. Great choice and beautiful products.

Unfortunately the grout wasnt the cleanest and a shower curtain around the bath??? Shower head is lower and its not great climbing in and out of the bath.

But the beds!
ahhhhhhh total bliss! so so comfy!
I have never slept on such a comfortable bed!

We breakfasted at 8. Book in advance for a discount.
The range and quality was amazing. Lots of choice, My girl was stoked with being able to have chocolate fountain for breakfast.

On check out they were happy to store our bags again while we wandered around town.

When it came time to leave the lovely Stephanie walked us through the hotel as a shortcut to where we were catching the airport.

That was very kind

We had a drink at the lobby bar too and that was nice

Our room keys played up a bit. They didnt always work for the lift or the room and it wasnt always easy to get it reset at reception. It took time and often the problem continued

dealing with reception was always quite slow - very friendly just slow.

Would I stay again? yes absolutely.

COuld it improve? Most certainly.

The Langham was never our choice of hotel brand. It was our first Langham experience and we were definitely surprised by the high level of service. Everyone we met was very friendly and I was always addressed by my last name, which was quite impressive. The hotel is old and the decor is a bit dated. However, we had a very enjoyable 2 night stay here.

We arrived before 10:00am and our room was not ready. A standard room was prepared for us so that we could freshen up and rest. Our room, the Park Suite, was finally ready at 3:00pm. It was large in size with a dining table for 6 and a guest toilet. The bed was so comfortable, the idea of buying the mattress did cross our minds. We had access to the Club Lounge and we really enjoyed the lively cocktail hour. We were told they serve only a light breakfast but we found the variety of items quite satisfying. We had wifi for free. Signal was strong throughout the hotel and it was fast!

We had treatment at the Chuan Spa and we were disappointed. The Spa was nicely decorated and the massage was good but not outstanding. We were given bathrobe and slipper after check in and we were told to find an available locker by ourselves. We did not appreciate carrying the package and looking for an empty locker. Since the locker room was opened to all guests, it was really messy. Used towels were on the floor and inside the shower. Clean towels went out without being refilled. I think the Chuan Spa has the potential to deliver a world class spa experience. However, a better spa management is definitely needed to achieve this goal.

Finally, the location. The hotel is about 10mins away from the main shopping district by car. There was a free shuttle running continously every 30mins. However, the mini van took only 10 guests and it was popular. It was always full unless we went early. We took taxi when we missed the shuttle and it cost less than NZD15 one way.

Thank you for your positive feedback about our service - we firmly believe it’s the key to providing a pleasant stay for all our guests. Good to hear you enjoyed the cocktail hour in the Club Lounge. It’s a great way to relax and meet some of the other Club guests. We have passed on your comments about Chuan Spa to our concierge. We are currently in the process of expanding the spa team and providing additional training to improve the spa experience for our guests.
Kind regards

For context, I stayed in NZ for three weeks on my Honeymoon in December 2013. We stayed in a number of hotels, motels and B&Bs. This review is written from that perspective.

Staff at check in were lovely, same at the valet. We were greeted with a genuine smile and given an upgrade. The room was quite nice, large and with a nice big window overlooking the pool. Didnt feel like anything massively special from the upgrade perspective, but was fine.

The pool is outdoors, and while the spa has a 'no children under 16' rule, this doesnt apply (or isnt applied to the pool).

The location is convenient enough, it's a short walk to nearby parks and the city.

Stayed here for 4 nights in November, 2013. The service is excellent and makes up for the rather tired feeling of the hotel. I stayed here on very many occasions when it was the Sheraton and the hotel still feels the same 10 years later.
The rooms are comfortable, the beds are excellent and the service and food in the Brasserie/Buffet is great.
Check in was difficult because the room was not available but reception do go some way to solving the problem by issuing a once off invitation to the Executive Lounge which was a nice touch. Spending an hour waiting for the room by enjoying the Lounge was not a bad compensation.
The major problem with the hotel if you are a tourist is that the hotel is slightly out of the centre and whilst you can walk down easily to the centre it is a steep walk back (taxi solves the problem).

Room Tip: Look for a quiet room
