“Rundown and old but good service”
Reviewed February 20, 2013

I usually stay at the Hilton when in Auckland but ended up here for a work conference last week. When you approach the building you already get a bad feeling as it looks just horrid from the outside, one of those ugly grey hotel blocks from a different time. I once stayed at the property about ten years ago when it still was a Sheraton and guess what- it still looks exactly the same as back then, even inside! It was dated ten years ago already but if they have invested anything since then, than it is certainly not visible. The lobby is old and dimly lit, all has a really ugly wooden touch to it like you haven't seen since the 80ies. The room itself had horrid old furniture in it, all seats and sofas had stains from decades of other guests doing who-knows-what in their seats. Upon entering the room, you would also get a big breeze of the typical old hotel smell, a mix of mould and cleaning products, yikes! I did like the pool though the water was heated to a far too high level which I didn't know ever existed outside the US. Actually- the whirl pool was only lukewarm so the two almost had the same temperature! It is also very obvious that Langham is based in Asia, the spa offers a lot of humbug ying yang treatments and the corporate colors are a most disgusting combination of piggy- rose and gold which hurts your eyes on the in-room dining menu and similar items. On the positive side, at least during our corporate sessions, the employees were extremely friendly and always at hand and the conference food also was excellent. I can't, however, tell whether the staff is always genuinely so caring or whether it was only because we were a big group and single parties get completely ignored which is something I have witnessed quite regularly at all sorts of hotels.

Room Tip: The higher the better. Prepare yourself for an experience like decades back in the past.

Great place to rest after a hectic couple of months. Enjoyed the pool and spa facilities with access to the gym. There was a shuttle going to the main shops and restaurants which saved a 15-20 minute walk although there are some eateries and shops near the hotel if you wanted to use them. Service was great and eating at the Eight restaurant was great too.

Once again another enjoyable stay @ the Langham. Superbly decorated with " Old World " charm. Everything great except from a very poor dining experience on Friday night @ Eight. Maybe we had the wrong waiter. Apart from that the staff are very obliging .Will return soon to the Langham Auckland

We are regulars at the Langham in Auckland and our stay is always a pleasure, mostly because of the usually outstanding service. We will continue using the Langham and always recommend it.

Only two (relatively minor) negative comments - worth making because they stand out from the normally brilliant service levels. The unfriendly chef cooking the eggs for the (otherwise fantastic!) breakfast at Eight restaurant needs to learn how to smile and be a bit warmer to his customers. We cringed when seeing his standoffishness with tourists. And the evening operator seems to have trouble hearing callers and knows little about the room service menu, which was a shame (especially as the room service is not cheap!).

Overall, though, minor niggles for a very good hotel in a great location.

Room Tip: Book breakfast in advance with your room and enjoy a better rate (even if you don;t go every day). O...

We had a lovely two days stay at The Langham Hotel. Staffs were superb... From the moment our car glided unto the hotel's entrance --- parking staff / valets were eager to help & assist us... We stayed at the hotel for a celebration & they were so thoughtfuL by giving us yummy cake & bottle of wine... The room was nice & the bed was really comfortable. Room decors -- vintage & elegant in style (old world).... Had lovely buffet breakfast @ Eight Resto....... Would not hesitate to stay at this place again! Most of our friends loved this hotel too shall I say...

The shuttle bus is a plus, but the shuttle is needed since the hotel is a long way from the action of Auckland's harbour.
A minus: We arrived early - before the 3pm check-in. We were told we could have a better room and go there immediately. It was $60 dearer, and the major difference seemed to be the availability of internet access. Other people were being checked in early - we saw them as we waited in the lobby.
A minus: we paid $40 per day for parking. The parking is not secure nor under cover. It is at the side of the hotel where the shuttle departs.
A minus. Negotiating the corridors when cleaning staff are servicing the rooms. This seems to take place all day.
A minus: The tv in the room was quite old.

Thank you for providing your feedback. Our early check-in policy is always to accommodate guests whenever we can, but we regret in busy periods this is not always possible. Our next level Executive room does have a higher standard of decor in addition to internet access. Access to the Langham Club Lounge also provides a more exclusive experience, including Butler Service and complimentary breakfast and evening drinks.

We have wonderful memories of this hotel and it is still fantastic. I would recommend upgrading to club benefits if you can. While the service is excellent, the benefits really are great and we did find that the time we spent outside of the club lounge had a much more hotel-y, tour group-y feel about it - not that that's a bad thing but the restaurant was crowded and we did have the misfortune of hearing an altercation between a guest and the staff (the yelling was all done on behalf of the guest though, no fault of the Langham). A few of the facilities are starting to look just a little bit tired (a few stains on the chairs and missing tiles in the spa) but really fantastic personal service otherwise. Well worth the money for a special occasion - the in room amenities in particular are bar none, as is the spa.
