This was a spur of the moment decision to go to the zoo. We went on a Sunday and arrived at 10.30am. The main car park was full but we parked on the main road and then realised there is also overflow parking a further 100m down the road. Quick and easy to get in and get started. Lockers are at the entrance if you don't want to carry around lots of bags (packed lunches).
There were plenty of animals and I liked the way it was set out, however it wasn't as easy to get around as Wellington zoo. More signage would have been helpful. Some of the shrubbery needs cutting back in various places e.g. the lions. When listening to the keepers talking, large crowds gather and it is difficult to see especially for young children. If it wasn't so busy you will be fine. The keepers were very informative and did give lots of great educational information, well worth listening to. Take the time to be patient and wait for the animals to come out and you will be rewarded. We stood at the tigers for 10 minutes and saw them come in and out lots of times, whilst others turned up, looked, saw the tigers weren't there and just left!
Food was as you would expect, 3 different eating places all looked good, the food we had was tasty. Picnic benches available for those who brought a packed lunch. All in all a good day, we finished at 2.45pm and had taken 20 minutes to each lunch. (so allow 4 hours)

We have recently immigrated to New Zealand and were searching for activities to entertain our 3&1/2 year old son, without breaking the bank. Yes, I suppose the entrance fees for adults could be cheaper, but what is good about the Zoo is that you really can spend the entire day there and get value-for-your money. I am not a fan of zoos and would prefer that the animals were still in the wild or in wildlife sanctuaries with more space, but I recognise that there is a place for them in rescuing / breeding certain species, educating the public and raising funds for conservation. Our son loved the zoo, especially the meerkat exhibit with the underground tunnels for children to explore and get up close to the meerkats (judging by the traffic, so did the other kids!). There are a lot of different animals, from a variety of continents and habitats to see in the zoo - you really do get a little whirlwind tour of the whole Natural World e.g. rhinos, tigers, seals, orang-utans, otters, etc. The section about native New Zealand wildlife is very interesting for some-one not from here. The zoo provides lots of information and learning experiences for the family. The kids play area near the restaurant and tiger exhibit gives parents a much appreciated break from walking in the heat (bring a hat and sunscreen on a summers day!) The food in the restaurant is also good, although you can bring a picnic lunch and sit under an umbrella at one of the tables outside. We have been to the Aquarium and Butterfly Creek and although our son loved them too, you can only spend about 2 hours max there. The Zoo is definitely the best choice if you want to treat the kids for the whole day with a fun and stimulating experience.

Worth the admission price, interesting exhibits. Unfortunately, we were there when they were renovating, but it can only be for the better. We found it a bit confusing because they blocked off areas. However, the sites are well set out and great for the animals. It was great to see the zoo isn't too commercialised with shops, so make sure who have a drink with you, as it is a large park. We use to watch the zoo show which featured auckland zoo, which lived up to its reputation. My advice when you go to see the kiwi, stay for a long time, be patient, wait for all the noisy people to leave, sit and wait, you will see them

We took our 3 year old grandson for a trip to the zoo. It was a fantastic experience! We saw how the fed the giraffes and the elephant was washed and had a dip in his pool afterwards! There is enough shade on a hot day, bathrooms facilities are good and there are ticks shops for those who want to purchase something to eat and drink. The animals are well looked after and in their natural habitat. Parents with children under 4 must bring a pram, the little ones get tired from walking the whole day. That way you don't have to carry them!
