As a solo traveler with a few days to kill before starting a work posting I decided to take a trip to the zoo. Despite it being the middle of winter here in Auckland the zoo was still full of families enjoying the midwinter holidays - always a good sign for an attraction.
The entry price was reasonable especially compared to some similar venues in the UK (and unlike the UK a map of the park was included with the ticket), the food was of good price and was well priced. All the staff I encountered were friendly and knowledgeable about the area they worked in.
The zoo had a fantastic variety of wildlife from all across the world and plenty of native NZ species. I felt very pleased to see a Kiwi as another visitor said this was her fourth visit to the zoo and it was the first time she had seen one!
In terms of transportation there is plenty of parking near the zoo and it is easy to get a bus to just outside the zoo. The public transport is reliable and well-priced.
Overall I would say this is a great day out for families and travelers looking for something to do in the day.

Being an ex-pat kiwi I wanted to take my australian husband and toddler son to zoo to see animals native to New Zealand.

We were not disappointed! Loved the native animal displays - they have done a great job with landscaping zoo utilising native plants.

The gift shop is well stocked with goodies & worth a visit after exploring the zoo.

A great family day out!

Really aesthetically pleasing zoo! Went on a rainy day so lots of room to move around, potter about and check out the animals. They had lots of environmental enrichment, lots of focus on conservation, and animals all appeared healthy and happy. Got a bit lost trying to follow signage around but nothing dramatic. The NZ native section was amazing, the Orangutan encounter was very informative about these amazing creatures. Say no to palm oil to conserve their habitat! Dawin's cafe was nice, really nice gourmet Kumara and Cashew pie! Reasonably priced entrance and food costs. Great gift shop. Lots of kids activities. Really enjoyed the Zoo Medicine building :)

We go here regularly and have bought a year-long, open entry "Friends of the Zoo" pass, which is BRILLIANT value. The zoo regularly improves the facilities, has a lot of new environments and has a great variety of animals. We have loved going here over the years and seeing it make REAL improvements for the animals. This zoo is HIGHLY recommended, close to Western Springs Park if you want to go for a walk, or the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT), this is a lovely zoo.

This is a lovely little zoo, very affordable entry and great for kids! It's nice and flat and has lots of areas to sit down and take stock, as well as a kids zone complete with tunnel slide, giant dragon and pet animals.

The food was also really affordable with a kids lunch box (fairly healthy) only costing $7. Much more affordable than Taronga where we live.

Recommended!
