The gallery hosted the 5th triennial recently and the exhibition space and the pieces displayed had the modern artists take on local and international themes. The staff are knowledgable and helpful and children are welcome. There is a lovely cafe with park views to relax and review the artworks. It is close to most of the CBD and in easy walking distance to the main Street, Queen St for shopping and eateries.

A very pleasant place to visit. The building is airy and spacious, with attractive open spaces to walk through and plenty of room afforded to the art works. The design is simple and the whole effect is clean and uncluttered. The cafe is very good (some balcony seating up among the leaves, complete with visiting sparrows!) and the lifts, toilets etc are excellent. There is comfortable seating in the open areas. The shop is not large, but is well stocked. Visitors are greeted on arrival and offered leaflets and help. We were able to view a travelling exhibition and the C20 New Zealand art exhibition, which may be permanent. The work is well displayed and informative labels accompany each piece. On a day when the gallery wasn't crowded, it was possible to stand close or further back and look at paintings etc for as long as we wanted. You could enjoy a 2-3 hour visit, but there is enough here to occupy you for much longer. Highly recommended.

Free Guided tour by volunteer, Amanda, helped give an overview of the gallery history and New Zealand art. Modern building extension integrates with the trees of Albert Park through large glass windows, giving light and spaciousness.
Cafe excellent too.

Well worth taking the time to see some really great art, its free entry and I took a few friends and we spent a couple of hours in the gallery.
