recently i was in Auckland for a conference and had the delight of visiting the Auckland Art Gallery. The collection is small but world class with well selected international pieces and a great NZ collection. Contemporary NZ art is really interesting, well made and conceptually challenging. If you are not so into the art enjoy the building which is beautiful as well as the part out the back. The whole city is really a well kept secret and should be on every ones bucket list.

Loved the architecture - the combination of the old and modern extension works brilliantly for me. Loved the exhibition - especially those on the 3rd floor which I found fascinating and thought-provoking. Loved it!

I must confess that the architect of Auckland's refurbished art museum is a friend so we went to see the building. We were not disappointed. The additions and alterations have been done so beautifully as to justify a visit. By opening the museum to the park behind, Richard Francis-Jones, its Australian architect, has created a very special civic building that will delight Aucklanders for years to come.
I was too busy looking at the building to notice the art but there is a lot to see and we loved our time there.

Since the Gallerys recent refurbishment it is a wonderful place, (and free), to go.
Located just off Queen St , discorporated into the side of Albert Park its truly a city must see.

Parking is a pain and time limited on the streets around it. The Parking building can be unexpectedly expensive so U need to plan if a car is used.
The art works cover a wide range of 'tastes' , something for everyone where u can be up close to them. But watch out for the custodian 'police' they are a paranoid if you get 'too close' to them. And those works that are spread about the floor walk ways ,beware if your trouser leg brushes them!
The Cafe is nice and reasonably priced with a outdoor area to relax the tied feet ,but if its just coffee then you are forced to stand in a long Q on peak days with those who want some eats. This needs improvement.

The shop has a wide and very interesting art related selection.

Discovered by surprise on an early morning walk, we were amazed that this free museum offered such an extensive array of contemporary art, including emerging New Zealand artists. In a striking contemporary structure, which incorporates an older historical building with aboriginal art displays, there are multiple levels of brightly lit, beautifully designed gallery spaces. You can enter at street level and exit at the back into the large and well maintained public park, near the university area. Highly recommend this if you have an hour or so to wander the galleries. Great museum store and cafe, as well.
