Owner description: With the largest maritime collection in New Zealand, the Maritime Museum tells the remarkable stories of epic voyages and journeys that have shaped New Zealand's history and identity. The Museum's exhibitions explore the history and stories of the Polynesian people's migration across the Pacific, European exploration, immigration and trade, NZ's modern yachting success and our relationship with the Sea.

The models of various ships and their history are amazing. Big ones too. There are elements of the museum which didn't hold our interest, like the sailboat racing and how it has evolved. But the other exhibits were wonderful.

Very good museum, enjoyed the Americas cup and the Sir Peter Blake story, the styles of the boats was interesting. Well worth the visit when you are in the auckland viaduct, though I no longer a NZ resident i think that if you can prove you from Auckland such as libaray card aucklanders get in free or discounted. I've advised all my relatives in Akl to go and visit now as it does remind you how rich our maritime history and present is.

The bloke is totally into boats, fishing etc. The lady tagged along. And we both enjoyed it! We also went on the Ted Ashby, the ketch-rigged deck scow. Such good value, and definitely worth it - what a fantastic day to be on the water on Auckland Anniversary Day!

The main purpose of the museum seems to be to tell the story of New Zealand's great entry and historic success twice (so far) in the America's Cup. But it is more as there are displays of all all sorts of maritime history and craft. fascinating if at times a bit disjointed. It is certainly worth an hour of your time. The shop is tiny and averagely poor.
