“Copthorne Harbour City”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2011

We stayed fro 2 nights at the end of October. It was noisy during the night, but I was aware of this from a visit last year. We enjoyed our visit, but the rooms and decor are dated, and could do with modernising

We stayed here for one night during the RWC 2011, the location is fantastic and our room looked right over the harbour which was lovely to wake up to.

We arrived very late at night and the staff member who met us was not very helpful or particularly pleasant. We had booked and pre-paid for two rooms for three guests but despite me showing him the receipt he was trying to put us into one room and charge us for an extra person. When he eventualy looked at the receipt, he found the other room booking and all was well.

However he insisted that I registered my credit card "in case we wanted to add anything on to our bill" and despite me explaining that I did not want to do this as we were only staying for one night and were just going to sleep and then check out before 10 am it seemed quite clear that unless I agreed we were going to be stuck in reception for most of the night!

The room was fine but could benefit from updating and this is especially true of the bathroom. That said, it was clean and the beds were very comfortable.

The daytime staff were delightful and couldn't have been more helpful and curteous, overall a great place to stay if you like to be in the heart of things.

Room Tip: Ask for a hgh floor and harbour view, away from the lift. The views are great and you will be away...

Stayed at this hotel twice during early October. The hotel is in a fabulous location on the water front in Auckland close to the ferrys and downtown area. Also the very popular Viaduct area is also very close. Here is the problem on Friday and Saturday nights the street noise, both traffic and pedestrian is above average. Unfortunately the windows at the hotel are very old and fail, despite the promises of the management, do not keep out the noise. Intoxicated folks can be hear yelling until 3 and 4 am!

The rooms and hotel facilities are 'tired' but clean. The food is good without being great and the staff are very friendly. The hotel has laundry facilities and a couple of overpriced computers.

In conclusion if you are looking for an hotel for its location in downtown Auckland and you do not have high expectations then this could be for you but AVOID Friday and Saturdays.

Room Tip: The higher floors would be better to avoid street noise.

We stayed at the Copthorne Harbourview on 2 occasions recently (5 nights each time) during the RWC 2011 while in New Zealand. The location is great and we could not fault that but I feel that the hotel made the most of this when pricing the rooms. on one booking, we paid $1831.18 for 5 nights but when we had to extend for an extra night as Air NZ had changed our flight, we were charged $92.50 for the one night? The hotel was almost empty so they must have reverted to normal pricing. The Copthorne Harbourview is not wheelchair friendly, having a main entry choice of a revolving door or a door that opens outwards. Guests are then faced with 3 steps to go from lobby to the lifts (no ramp). In the breakfast area, there are steps as well to access the food area. Beds have the worst pillows I have ever encountered in a hotel of this class although the beds themselves are fine. On our 2nd stay, we were placed in a room with a small analogue TV which given we were there for the World Cup was not acceptable to us. We were moved to a room with a better TV but which had no doors on the closet. Breakfast was probably OK if you were staying there for only 2 days but we spent 10 days in this hotel and it was the same every day. I would have thought they could have varied the choices a bit.
Views are excellent, I could not fault them, but the ANZ building over the road has a large neon sign that comes on at night and you need to close your curtains to get any sleep.
You can open your window for fresh air which is good.
Room cleaning was haphazard - often we would return in the afternoon to find housekeeping had not been to the room or they would come to the room and try to put 'pressure' on us to not do the room.
My main bugbear was the laundry. There are no laundries in the immediate area and the Copthorne Harbourview has a guest laundry but to do a load costs $10NZ to wash and dry your clothes. This gets expensive! Most other hotels I have stayed in have free laundry facilities for guests.
We ate in the restaurant but it struck me as a restaurant for guests, rather that one people from outside the hotel would chose to eat at, if you know what I mean.
Room service was fine.
There is a nice verandah where you can sit and drink and watch the harbour.
Note that there are 2 Copthorne hotels in Auckland - this review relates to the Copthorne Harbourview in Quay St.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are larger.

Prime location on the waterfront, but very disappointing hotel in all respects. Does not achieve my expectations for Copthorne/Millennium hotels. Not much improvement since the building was built, probably in the 1960's or 1970's. Having stayed in three other Copthorne hotels on the same Rugby World Cup visit to New Zealand, this is the only one we would not recommend.

We were in a "superior" room. Air conditioning makes more noise than cool air, must have windows open (October, I can't imagine it in the height of summer) so lots of dock/quay noise, running water in toilet, separate taps to control temperature in shower, etc., etc. etc. Staff were the least helpful we encountered on our trip.

Room Tip: Probably not possible. Building needs to be completely gutted, rebuilt, or drop down the spectrum of...

Stayed for two nights for the RWC. We had no real complaints about the hotel - it was clean, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the location/views were great. However we found that the door rattled every time someone used the lift, the shower head had been installed by a midget, the bathroom was of the type where it had an old-fashioned shower curtain that wrapped itself around you when you showered (why DO they do that??!!) and the kettle didn't work. The room was quieter than it could have been due to extra glazing but the window cill still got soaked if it rained. Having said all that, I'd probably stay there again but, compared to our other destinations in NZ, this was not the quality we had become used to.

I agree with number of other reviewers about the location of the hotel. it is across the road from Princes wharf. Every room faces to the harbour and has water views. We arrived on P&O cruses and disembarked at the Princes Wharf. We literally walked across the road and checked into the hotel. we didn't had to stand in line with hundred of others in cue for a taxi or drag a luggage across the down-town to hotels. Normal check in was 2pm however, we checked in at 1030am to our room right away, no extra cost, no hassles at all. The room is clean, bathroom is well presented. However, you can hear mummer of conversation from other rooms at night. I have to say the staff at the hotel are the assets to the somewhat tired hotel. Staff at the hotel make it to 4star otherwise i would only rate it 31/2 star hotel. Food is fabulous, great steak & great lamb dish. Definitely chef at the hotel is highly commended. you have access to free 20 min WiFi internet each day at the ground & 1st floor with your laptop. bar has happy hour everyday and is very good value and good selection of NZ wines.
