“Nice relaxing place to stay”
Reviewed November 26, 2012

I* recently stayed in the Surrey Hotel fo 2 weeks. I had been there years ago, and all the rooms have been renovated since then. Very comfortable and handy to amenities, it is a 15 or so minute walk to the end of Ponsonby Road or K Road and about another 10 minutes to the top of Queen Street. There is a supermarket within 2 minutes walk for necessities and/or snacks. The restaurant is open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, most days they have buffet breakfast (depending on how full the hotel is), and on Sunday, a roast lunch (which I didn't get to try as the chef was off sick the one and only sunday I was there. Next time for sure. The place is kept nice and clean and staff are very friendly and helpful. Plenty of carparking on the grounds with easy access to the hotel itself.

Went to Auckland for Mary Poppins Show found the Hotel was well located for our needs. Stayed in the Motel part on 1st night found it a bit dated and tired. On arrival we where offered to go into a family unit within the Hotel for our next two nights which we took up. This was well appointed in that it had two bedrooms but as we where told it had a lounge area we wondered where that was! It did have a kitchen area with a table and 2 chairs. The staff where all friendly and we would stay again as we found it easy to get to the inner city and other areas from there.

We stay in this hotel during the triathlon period where all hotel in the city centre were full and fortunate we got this hotel rather than some hotel near airport. The hotel is classic, the room was clean. I was stay in the room up stair the fornt office. But some of my friend they were in the other building across the road. Their room have kitchen facilities.
Breakfast was ok, hot breakfast and you also can order omelette and hashbrown for free instead of some hot items, cereal, juice, pastry in the buffet table.
Hotel also provide a rent car where you can hire and going around the city. But for internet you have to pay. But They provide a computer in the lobby to share for free. I like the lobby with antique and classic style interior and also an old piano that still have nice sound.
They also have small swimming pool and big meeting/function room near the lobby.

Room Tip: Ask for the room in the main building, more modern and easy to get acces. But if you are family and...

Checked out today, would love to have stay but duties call. Check in was a breeze as i arrived late at night, the man at the desk was very helpful. had brunch the next day, waitress was very attentive and gave excellent service. i had the Carbonara which was to die for. came back for diner and service just as great. Chef let me know the specials, enjoyed an amazing soup and pizza with a bottle of Sav Blanc. room was great for the price. will definitely stay again.

My husband and I recently spent a night here. First time staying, would definitely stay again. Rooms look very recently refurbished. So nice clean and tidy place to stay. We had room 820 which was very quiet, which were were unsure about being so close to Great North Road. German ? girl on reception was very friendly, same as staff in Restaurant who were great. It is nice to have staff that are so welcoming and genuinely friendly. Would definitely stay here again. Good priced meals, both dinner and especially breakfast at only $15.00 per person for a buffet breakfast.

Stayed in a room that faced out the back. Unfortunately there was a DREADFUL smell wafting in due to unemptied large skip bins we presumed. The smell also came through the heating, which took about an hour to heat up to even slightly warm. Must admit once it got warm the room stayed warm. On returning home from a celebratory dinner out we noticed that the peep hole in the door had nothing in it (glass or whatever) and we could see right into our room from the corridoor. Not really very acceptable is that! So all in all, not an experience we will try again at this hotel.

Thanks for bringing this issue to my attention. We have checked the rubbish skip area and do not believe that this is the culprit, the skip is only 2 weeks old and I assume you stayed during the weekend, it is emptied each Friday. I have asked the plumber to come and inspect our drains to see if there is a problem there? My sincere apologies for any discomfort we may have caused.

This is one of the only hotels in Grey Lynn, so has something of a monopoly on visitors who need to stay there. It's characterful inside and out and has a quaint charm, though rooms on the top floor can't be accessed by elevator, and some rooms are a bit hard to find. Some rooms (despite them being non-smoking) smell vaguely of smoke - possibly from the heater vent sucking air from outside. While there are one or two nice touches - complimentary newspaper, tea, coffee, fridge and a good continental breakfast - these barely make up for the price. The place needs to be charging two thirds of what it is. As others have said, the staff are great: helpful, friendly and attentive, so on that basis I will stay again.
