“Overcrowded by Oztag playing Ozzies”
Reviewed March 2, 2006

Stayed here on a two day stopover. The hotel is in a great central location and is one of the better looking hotels you come across in Auckland. Our twin room was clean and an excellent size for the price. Easy access to everything you're likely to want to see in Auckland and with plenty of choice for local coffee shops should you not opt for the hotel breakfast.

Unfortunately our trip was tarnished somewhat by a huge group of Oztag (that's a sport if you didn't know!) playing tourists. They basically took over the hotel and especially the bar and eating areas on the lobby floor and were on occasion extremely loud. This is clearly not the hotels fault but we also noticed the West Indies cricket team were staying at the same time. The hotel therefore (rightly) appears to be a first choice for touring sports teams and you may wish to ask if any are already booked in when considering this hotel.

Otherwise an excellent choice.

This was a fine hotel in a convenient location but not quite as nice as we expected for the price, $228NZ with tax ($157 US) The room was average size and the bed was low to the floor and just your standard bed, not on par with others at this type of hotel, but you did get to choose special pillows. Paying extra for a "club" room allowed us to partake of their complimentary bar (wine/beer) and finger food from 5-7 PM. It also included a continental breakfast which was adequate but nothing special. The advertised in room Internet is not free, and indeed is rather pricey. Around $30 NZ for 24 hours.

Based on the raving reviews on this site, we booked our last night at the Crowne Plaza in standard rack rate rooms (approx USD 80 per night per room).

The pro's:
- Good location: couple blocks away from the waterfront, in the city center
- Price
- Clean
- Extended breakfast buffet additional for approx 15 USD

The Con's:
- VERY basic rooms with average mattrasses;

The hotel is an average hotel with a good location; The rooms are properly appointed but lack any quality materials or color choices; The hotel is good for an overnight stay but would be boring and unadequate for an extended stay;

Overall we had a good experience but if this is the #1 in Auckland then the rest must be really disappoinging.

We stayed at the club level for 3 nights.
The hotel is perfectly located in the city center. So almost all atractions and sights are within walking distance.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
The rooms were unusually spacious (for club level) and well maintained. The telescope in the room was definitely a very nice extra!
The only complaint about the hotel we have is about the other hotel guests: Expect to meet a lot drunken, bad behaving and loud US citizens at the bar for complimentary evening drinks. The positive side is that you will almost have the same room for breakfast almost to yourselves in the morning.

We arrived on an early flight and were at the hotel for 8am. I asked if we could drop our bags and like many others we were given immediate access to our room on the 27th floor.

The club floors are well worth the extra, you get breakfast and evening cocktails as well as access to the lounge. Brilliant views across to the harbour as well.

On the first morning some drunken yobs on the 18th set off a dry powder fire extinguisher at 5.30am, setting off the alarms so the entire hotel was evacuated. We had a long walk down 27 floors on the stairs, to find half of NZ's fire brigade outside! They were arrested and ejected from the hotel. We were treated excellently by the staff, and at breakfast the manager came over to personally apologise.

We would stay there again, there are friendly staff, great rooms and the location can't be beat (5 minute walk to the Sky tower for example). One of the best hotels we've stayed in.

We arrived after our flight from the UK. With only a short hour break in Singapore we were exhausted but my 18month old baby's body clock had other ideas! So my husband and son were walking the corridors and playing in the reception area at very odd times of the night! The staff were supurb, didn't mind at all. They were extremely friendly and helpful. In the restaurant the staff were charming & helpful. The room was very comfortable, everything we had requested was waiting for us as we arrived. High chairs available in the restaurant & lifts big enough to fit the pram.
I would definatley stay at this hotel again.
