“Great location and views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2009

We booked two separate nights in the Crowne Plaza - one at the start of our seven day tour of the island, and one at the end. Our first room was upgraded to an executive room - very spacious with views looking down towards Auckland harbour. Complimentary breakfast and drinks available. We didn't have this luxury during our second stay but we were not unpressed. The hotel is in a perfect location, close to many bars, restaurants, tourist shops and of course the Skytower. My only criticism is that you have to use your room card for the lift... which we had fun with to say the least! Very frustrating, but understand that they do this for security.

Overall I would recommend the hotel, especially as it is linked to a plaza with an abundance of shops, restaurants, more shops and food stores.

We loved our trip to New Zealand and would love to go back there again very soon.

We stayed here in a two queen size bed room on the 25th floor with our two kids. Very clean and comfortable beds. Great location as it on top of the Atrium shopping centre which was once the place to shop, now filled with asian owned stalls of clothing and gifts mainly. On the bottom floor is a food court and you can get great dim sum food to takeway. The food court closes at 6 pm.

All in all very good, I got a rate of $190 per night including 2 cooked breakfasts which are normally $31.50 pp. Very central location, Auckland doesn't really have a nice cosy centre so you may find a place that looks good but is off the beaten track a bit. The upmarket department store Smith and Caughey, is 2 minutes away down through the
shopping mall and in through the back entrance.

I liked the fact that the windows could be opened in the room and you are not in a sealed, air conditioned room. However unlike a previous reviewer we could not get any free internet access by walking around the room looking for a free connection. All of them required passwords. The rate at the hotel isn't too bad, $5 per hour or $33 per day but across the road there is a convenience store that has internet available for $1 for 20 minutes of $2 per hour.

Food at the buffet was pretty good compared to some of the offerings I've seen for similar rates in overseas hotels and it goes until 10.30am.

That's all.I would stay there again if I didn't have to share a room with the kids!

Stayed here for 2 nights at the beginning of March. Good location - standard business hotel. We needed to orient ourselves, pick up the hire car etc.

Staff were efficient and helpful. We arrived late in the evening and the bar staff rustled up excellent club sandwiches for us. Indeed because the weather was so bad we ate in the hotel restaurant the following evening - which we would not normally do. The food was excellent and the service attentive. - Full marks.

Another feature of the hotel we found good was the guest laundry. Having spent ten days on the road in Hong Kong and Australia we found this very useful and at $2 a load good value.

All in all a good please to stop and regroup if you need to orient yourself before heading down to the South Island

We stayed here twice in January, one night at a rate of $119 and a further two nights a few days later at $160/night. All in all, the Crowne Plaza Auckland was a very good hotel for our stay in Auckland.

The hotel is located in the city centre just across the road from the SkyCity casino complex. It is a ten minute walk down to the harbour, and the Queen Street shopping paradise is just outside the hotel.

The hotel is built as part of a complex called the Atrium on Elliott, which includes lots of shops as well as the hotel. If you have a car, you can park it in the Atrium Car park. The hotel will validate your Atrium car park ticket, and you can go in and out as many times as you like for the same price. It costs $18/day on weekdays, and $8/day on weekends. I believe that this is reasonably good value for central Auckland.

We are Platinum Priority Club members, and didn’t think that the benefits were so good. Usually we get a welcome drink, but no such thing. We also get a letter from the manager, but we only got it on one of the stays. However, we were given rooms on Floor 26, which was the highest possible floor before going to the Club Rooms on Floor 27. They probably would have upgraded us to a club room, but these rooms only have one king bed in them, and we needed two double beds.

The rooms were tastefully decorated and they have been recently refurbished. The beds were very comfortable. We had a view of SkyCity from the rooms. I don’t remember if they had any non-English TV channels, but they probably did. Tea, Coffee and Hot Chocolate sachets were included.

The hotel has a wired network as well as Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Both services are an additional cost, but if you walk around your room with your laptop or mobile, you will find one of Auckland’s many free wireless connections.

We only experienced one real problem with the hotel, and that was a problem with the key cards. One of them wasn’t working, so we went downstairs. They reissued the key card and came up to the room with us, but it still wasn’t working. It turned out that the card reader on the door had run out of power. The engineer wasn’t available at the time, so they manually opened the door. The catch was that we couldn’t actually leave the room once they had done that, or they would have to come up again.

The hotel has a restaurant, Aria, but we didn’t go there. We ate at SkyCity twice, once at a café called Rebo and the other time at their seafood buffet called The Observatory. The buffet is $60NZD, which is really, really good value for what they offer. Service at the Observatory is great, and you also get to go to the SkyTower observation deck before or after your meal. We also had the all-you-can eat Yum Cha at Ming Court in SkyCity, but it wasn’t so good, and I wouldn’t recommend it.

There are also lots of restaurants down at Viaduct Harbour. We went to a Japanese restaurant called Umi, which was very good.

Auckland is a reasonably safe city to visit, but there was one local guy who was trying to follow us, perhaps with the intent of stealing our stuff. We were able to throw him off by crossing the road. Just remain alert and you should be fine.

There is heaps to see and do in Auckland. We decided to take a harbour cruise. They have special fares if you buy your tickets on the day, and the tours are quite good. Other attractions include the casino, some thrill activities (eg. Bungy), shopping, theatre etc.

All in all, I would recommend the Crowne Plaza Auckland to anyone visiting Auckland.

Our fourth stay at the Crowne Plaza, one of our favourite Auckland hotels, & this time we decided to pay a bit extra for the Club. Our room had a great outlook over the city & the water views from the Club lounge were definitely worth a photo. As always the staff were friendly & helpful (one of the main reasons this hotel rates among our favourites). But what an absolute disappointment the Club was – the turndown service at night was a joke – the bedding was not turned down & 2 chocolates were just left haphazardly on top of the bed. The food at the Club Lounge was average – afternoon tea was great & was a good introduction but from there things definitely went downhill. The coffee machine was not fully automated & unless there was a staff member around making a cup of coffee or hot chocolate was hit & miss, the overall food selection & quality was disappointing. Going for a cup of coffee at 8.30pm the Lounge was in darkness – we fumbled around for light switches & turned to make a cup of coffee – only food on offer was dry biscuits. Would we stay at the Crowne Plaza again – absolutely yes. Would we upgrade to the Club – no way, it’s worth it to pay a few dollars more & go to the Langham Hotel Club which is absolutely excellent in comparison.

We walked in off the street without a reservation and was pleasantly greeted at reception with a reasonable rate. Baggage was taken up to room efficiently eventhough we had not arrived at our room yet. Room is modern, nicely decorated and clean. Bathoom is nice athough we prefer a bigger bathroom. Liked the LCD TV on the wall.

Stayed one night on way home. Very handy for city, harbour and airport bus. Clean room and helpful staff when we had a problem opening the safe to get our passports etc when leaving. Definitely a business and conference hotel. Unfortunately, we arrived when tens of business people were also checking in. It was chaos. Can't use the lifts without a swipe card and ours hadn't been activated. Between these problems and the number of people waiting for 4 small lifts, it took us more than 20 minutes to get from reception to our room. Happened to other people too. The hotel was just too busy to even consider using the bar or looking around. We didn't even use the club facilities we'd been upgraded to - we just wanted out, there were too many people around and who'd been upgraded too. Staff seemed friendly enough but not a patch on sister hotel in Queenstown for friendliness, atmosphere and outlook. Appreciate that our experience may not be typical (e.g. judging by other reviews) and we weren't there very long. But it was our experience and compared unfavourably to most of the other places we stayed while in NZ for 3 weeks.
