“Excellent Hotel for Business or Pleasure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2013

My wife and I stayed for four nights in a luxury marina view room while on holiday in the North Island. I also regularly travel for business and was thoroughly impressed with this 'boutique' style hotel with excellent service, rooms and amenities.
The location is great with just a few minutes walk to the restaurants and bars in the Viaduct precinct and only about 10 minutes walk to Queen Street. It may only be an issue in wet weather given there is no cover.
In particular we enjoyed the room layout and level of comfort and space. Concierge staff were always willing, attentive and knowledgable; and the public areas of the hotel were very relaxing and more akin to a luxury spa retreat. We agree we will definitely be back and in my view this is the best overall luxury hotel in Auckland at this time.
Well done to the Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour Team!! Chris & Paula Wall (Canberra, Australia)

Bonjour wally801,

Thank you for your recent stay with Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour. I am delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay, particularly our comfortable rooms and excellent service.

The location of the hotel makes it truly the best of both worlds - a relaxing marina-side retreat only minutes from the central city. Of course in wet weather we can provide umbrellas or arrange transportation for longer journeys.

Thank you again for your stay and I hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back very soon.

Best regards,

Megan

As the title suggests this is a modern style of hotel. It is quite minimalist but has a very calming atmosphere.
The position of the hotel is great with just a short walk to downtown CBD, but being situated on the water with the marina adjacent is a lot more pleasing than being in the centre of the city.
The rooms are a very good size with great amenities. Yes, the beds are beautiful but I found the large feather pillows too much for me, but I'm sure you can change these if requested.
We enjoyed a beautiful dinner with friendly service in the Lava restaurant. Great food and setting. The interior is full of backlit marble from Chile and looks incredible after dark.
The Lava restaurant was also where we had breakfast. We had full breakfast included in our rate. I did find the buffet was a bit slow at being replenished. The hot portion is cooked fresh for you and although this is excellent there was only a choice of eggs with accompaniments. It would have been nice to have had pancakes or something different one day.
Although I didn't get a chance to use it on this trip the pool and gym looked top rate.
All in all this is a beautiful hotel and situated at the viaduct there are many choices of restaurants close by.

OK, so usually we don't spend much time in our room so we can overlook most shortcomings in the design. However, we were extremely jet lagged (i.e. we didn't sleep) so we had more time than usual to assess the room. Superficially the room had everything but the layout just didn't work - it was long and narrow with a tiny console table providing the only clear surface and the TV wasn't really positioned well for viewing from the bed. Moreover, we had a view of the bus station when we had expected the harbour. Had we been staying for more than one night we would have requested an alternative. That said, the hotel was in a great location, the staff friendly and the breakfast bounteous.

Room Tip: Ask about the view from the room when booking.

My partner brought me to Sofitel for a surprise stay to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. The location of the hotel was great and my first impression of the hotel was that it was very modern and sleek. When we arrived at our room I took some time to check out what the Sofitel had to offer. The room was quite decent sized with a large king bed (Luxury room). The bathroom was quite large with a bathtub and a shower which was separate. Very clean. The bed was very comfortable with several layers to sleep on, which made it very soft. Two pillows on each side of the bed where one was firmer and one was softer so that you get to choose what you prefer.

Unfortunately the air conditioning was a bit loud in my opinion. There was a TV in the room which was strangely placed in the middle of the room, facing the wall. There was a sofa in the room as well, however it was very awkward watching TV from either the sofa or the bed. Not very well thought through in my opinion.

Now, I was quite happy about the room. Nothing major that would have brought the rating down from a five to a four. However, what brought it down for me was the service. Hardly any of the staff were smiling, and the worst was the hotel restaurant 'Lava' where we went for breakfast. We placed our coffee and tea order three times before we got the coffee and tea around 20 minutes later. The restaurant was not that busy either, so there wasn't really any excuse. When I finally got the tea, the spoon was dirty and had to be changed. Now, it might not seem like something to complain about, but for a 5-star hotel I would have expected better. Also, the food was not great in my opinion.

Once we had finished breakfast (which was half price due to my partner's membership) we were told that because my partner did not bring his membership card to the restaurant, we could settle it once we checked out. However, on check out they charged us the full amount and said that the restaurant is responsible for sorting that. After mentioning that the restaurant told us to settle it on check out, they refunded the amount they charged, however not happily.

Comparing the service at Sofitel to the service at Pullman, I have to say Pullman really made an effort. They remembered your name, always smiled at you and were happy to help when asked. Yet Pullman is currently number 10 out of hotels in Auckland, while Sofitel is number three. Maybe they all had a bad day when we were there, who knows! :)

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view and you could get a view of the Skytower. The rooms without 'the view...

The Sofitel Auckland is a fantastic hotel - it is NOT bang in the centre of Auckland, but is in a beautiful location close enough to everything. It, in my opnion, captures the essence of Auckland - i.e. the tropical, harbour metropole of New Zealand.

As is typical with Sofitel (in my experience), the service is exemplary. Check-in was flawless. I especially enjoy breakfast here - a mixture of the cuisine and the wonderful location on the waterfront.
