Five star hotels around the world tend to have certain standards. Unfortunately, Auckland's Sofitel Viaduct missed the mark for us, with service the big let down. Like many other trip advisers have mentioned, there was no one to help us with our bags on arrival, with the concierge watching us struggle with our bags from inside the hotel. This may seem trivial, but at the Sofitel's price, it should be part of the service. The front desk staff seemed equally disinterested upon check in, and at every other time we required service. The desk attendants did little to rectify, or even acknowledge, problems we had with our bathroom (seems to be a theme). That said, the concierge was helpful with tips and advice, although indepth knowledge of this beautiful city and its surrounds seemed lacking. Still, the hotel itself is stunning and conviently located close to several eating excellent areas. However, service-wise, you can do a lot better in Auckland.

Very well presented Hotel with first class service from all the staff - well appointed rooms, and tasty menu's - This Hotel is located in the heart of the waterfront of Auckland's marina - which has a lot to offer from watching the rich and famous to quiet meals on the quay.

Room Tip: All rooms seem to be well appointed - mine looked out on to the centre of the complex - Harbour views are also available

Ever been to a hotel where they teach you how to open a bottle of fancy French bubbles with an authentic French Cavalry ceremonial Sabre?? - Well look no further than the Sofitel Auckland where this ancient French custom is alive and kicking ( or should i say stabbing??) !! - They have even named one of their bars after the tradition.

Checked into this rebirthed hotel which was once a Westin branded facility - that is, until one day the chief bean counter discovered that there were too many Red beans and not enough Black beans in the till. - After a short respite - Enter the Sofitel hotel chain who have breathed new life into this tastefully enchanting hotel on the harbour.

Last year we stayed at the Auckland Hilton, which probably has an edge in terms of position as most rooms (and definately the suites) provide wonderful panoramic views of Auckland harbour.

However, this year we tried the Sofitel and whilst it was set further back than the Hilton it still had water views and it has a much more luxurious feel and look than the Hilton offering.

The entry and general areas of the Sofitel weave their way through a tastefully decorated foyer and provide access to an outdoor deck overlooking a waterway as well as the breakfast area.

At night the staff light lanterns and place them in the general areas as well as the hallways of the guest floors and this provides a wonderful effect. - They call this the "lighting of the lanterns" and this arrangement also has its origins set in French tradition.

We had a suite which had nice views of the harbour as well as a well fitted out bathroom, plenty of space and a very comfy bed.

Service in the hotel was friendly and efficient. It is in close proximity to shops, restaurants and public transport. it is also in a very central location and therefore very convenient.

But for us, the lasting memory will be the smile on my wife's face as she slid a long ceremonial French cavaly Sabre along the length of a chilled bottle of French bubbles and knocked the top off !! - The pressure inside makes the glass break evenly at the top of the neck and avoids any shards falling inside, so the decapitated bottle is ready to drink once beheaded! - the top flies several metres away at the time of decapitation and there is a "pop" as well.

After the opening the staff collect the top of the bottle with cork still inside and cork cradle intact on top of the cork and they then present it to you in a small glass box along with an official certificate from the hotel cofirming that you have performed the ancient art of Sabrage! - Nice experience and also very unique.

We found this hotel to be very comfortable and we liked the more upmarket feel than that of the Hilton offering. - We would stay here again as we enjoyed the experience and the staff front of house culture. - Tres Bien !

Room Tip: Get a suite with water views. If you are going to stay at a hotel on the water its a bit of a waste if you can't get a room with a nice view.

Nice hotel near to the viaduct. Rooms size is excellent. The driveway and lobby can be a bit choatic in the morning but the staff do their best.
Checking in/out was a breeze. Easy walking to all the action near the habour.
