“beware of the Marathon”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2012

I booked this room for my wife and her best friend to enjoy a day of luxury on the last day of their NZ Holiday.
Unfortunately he night booked was the night before the early morning start of the Auckland marathon. Travelling from australia we had NO IDEA this event was on or how it would impact the stay.
The moving of barricades all night followed by the loud Speakers fro 6 am by their room which was one floor above the start line led to a ost unenjoyable nights stay.
I had also requested for them a room with two beds and had retiterated this in the booking form and by telepone to senure this occured. Despite asurances given by Hotel staff they were llocated a room with a king bed and had to wait some time to get a room change.
I do acknowledge a phone call from he hotel two days before they were due to arrive to adviseabout parking restricytions because of the marathon but by then it was too late to change hotels as they were well into their 10 day rod trip around the north island.
The ladies also had some issues getting their bags delivered to the room and had to wait over an hour for this to happen.

In summary , great location , nice surroundings but timing on this meant it was a most unenjoyable experience!!

Used my BA air points as a treat. Hotel is nice but is defo no match for the same star hotels outside of NZ.

Bad Points
View of bus depot
Remote control did not work
Room service was cold
Sauna did not work
No robes
Not enough veggie options
Bar closed at 1130pm
Carpet was badly stained on level 6 hallway
JD & ginger was served in a tall glass, when it should have been short
Lava restaurant food was bland

Good points
Staff are very friendly
Lobby is very nice
Pool is nice

Overall I think this hotel is way overpriced for what it offers, you are just paying for the name as it does come close to The Sofitels overseas.

This hotel is superb. My friend and I stayed there recently, as a friend had recommended it to us for a fun evening in the city. Being so close to all the bars and restaurants on the viaduct it was in easy walking distance. The views were great, but the best part of all was that the room itself was furnished luxuriously with the latest modern decor, and they even provided your own personal coffee machine! The facilities were perfect, and we took advantage of the swimming pool and spa complex. The gym also had modern equipment. The breakfast was YUM! The food was prepared freshly to our request, but included in the package deal. Thanks so much, Claudio, for recommending it :-)

This is the second Sofitel we have stayed at and again it did not disappoint.
The hotel is situated on the Viaduct so within walking distance of all the cafes, restaurants and Auckland night life.
The hotel is a piece of art - fantastic ambiance that takes advantage of the harbour and also amazing modern NZ art.
The rooms are comfortable - however, I would recommend that you pay the money for a harbourview room as the rooms on the road have office views which is a bit invasive if you want the blinds open when you are in your room.
Now all of this was fantastique - however, the best thing about this hotel is the staff - they are AMAZING! I have been in the customer service industry for many years and I have never seen or been more impressed by the service that these amazing employees provide to their customers. They are so welcoming, helpful and nothing is ever a problem... Sofitel should be very proud of the level of consistant service that the Auckland team provides, as this is what customer service is all about. We will be returning and I look forward to my next Sofitel experience!

Room Tip: Bite the bullet and get a harbour/marina view room

We stayed at the Sofitel in Auckland as a treat for my 65th birthday. It was a second visit the first being when it was the western. I had ordered High Tea for 8 friends which we had in the lounge and it was fantastic. Great savoury and sweet treats. Loved our room, we had a view of the water. The service by the concierge especially was faultless. The position is second to none and the low rise adds a new dimension to hotel stays. In the evening lots of candles were put in place and lit creating a wonderland. So what about the internet relax and enjoy.

Room Tip: King room with a view of the viaduct.

Beautiful hotel with gorgeous rooms. The rooms were very large and well set out. Bathrooms are bigger than other hotels and have a large shower and deep bath, and it is big enough for two (normally lies)
The bed is the most comfortable, as they are in all Sofitel properties, and the location of the hotel is great. Close to the city centre and also great restaurants along the harbour.
We stayed for our one year wedding anniversary so also enjoyed the bar, Gerald was great:)
and the restaurant. Food was delicious (risotto and lamb..salted caramel icecream was to die for) and staff were very friendly and provided great service, our waitress (Lauren?) was very attentive. Staff at reception and concierge were all wonderfully helpful and also Claudio the Director of Sales provided excellent service throughout our stay, and was great with meeting all our requests.
All in all this is a great hotel, definitely the best we stayed at in Auckland. Will return again!!

The rooms themselves are nice-- clean, good size, comfortable beds. However, we dealt with two major issues:

1) The entire place is a fish bowl. You can't open your blinds without having the entire hotel be able to see directly into your room. They have slatted doors/screens that you can close, but they are useless at night when your lights are on. So, you end up having to keep the heavy blinds closed, which is miserable.

2) The staff is totally MIA. I can't tell you how many times I tried calling down to the front desk or other extensions (for wake up calls, room service, general questions) and no one ever picked up. I was traveling with a large group and everyone had the same issue. Yet-- the hotel wasn't that busy while we were there. As well, they proactively offered to deliver us the US news every morning--- and then not once actually did it. In general, the place felt totally clueless when it came to the staff.
