Heard and read great things about Cocoro before visiting, including claims of it being the best in Auckland. We had the standard Degustation, which had a few interesting dishes. But overall I can't say this is the best Japanese food in Auckland (Katsura would take that title in my mind).

That's not to say the food is bad - food is great and presentation and service are to a high level. I would just expect for the price you pay ($85 for Degustation) that this would be a level above what other Japanese restaurants can offer for half the price.

If dining as a couple this isn't the most ideal restaurant - tables are close together and difficult to have a private conversation.

Beautiful Japanese food served by wonderfully polite wait staff, amazing decor, comfortable but elegant, tucked away off Ponsonby Road so feels quite special. Cannot fault this fabulous restaurant.

Last night we dined with friends at Cocoro. We had the six course degustation menu which I thoroughly recommend. I also recommend the extensive wine, saki and drinks list. There is something to drink to suit everyone's tatse. The food was sensational. The tuna, salmon, Chilean toothfish, the duck, the green tea icecream and the multitude of accompanying sauces, vegetables, foams, flowers etc etc etc brillaintly bring your tastebuds alive. At $85 per head for the degustation the faire is excellent value for money. The staff are very good at explaining the different elements of each dish and the service is brillaint, as are the numerous dishes the food is presented in. This is an almost surreal experience awakening you to the potential of how good a restaurant can be. We paired the food with a bottle of Felton Road Block One Rielsing from 2006, a slightly sweet wine that went very well with all the fish courses. The desserts were paired with glasse of Beames de Venise, Chateau Villefranche Sauterne and a New Zealand Risling along with a brilaint XO Cognac. For my thinking the French sauterne was the best match. If you have the chance go and delight yourself at the best Japanese i've ever had in New Zealand. Thoroughly recommended.

Don't miss their chawanmushi 茶碗蒸し and Blue Fin Tuna hand roll sushi. The food at Cocoro is fine and a cut above all other Japanese restaurants in town. The taste is delicate and presented beautifully. They also have a good range of sake. A nice intimate setting.

I just returned from a truly terrific dining experience at Cocoro. I thoroughly enjoyed the degustation menu ($100), with the wine match ($65). The wines were just fantastic ranging from a Peregrine Riesling to a Japanese Plum wine to go with the final course. The food was really outstanding. My only faults were that the first course was a poor introduction of the delights to come as it was small and unremarkable. It was nice, but lack substance. The duck was a highlight as was the second course, and the toothfish, and the filo wrapped prawn (so tasty!!). Didn't care for the Kumara in the final dessert course, but overall a simply delicious (and surprisingly filling) experience. Lovely cool and quiet room with the open kitchen working quietly away. Service was attentive, though language skills of some of the servers was a bit poor, but for me that added to the experience as I felt I was in Japan. I cannot recommend Cocoro enough for a special night out!
