“Excellent place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2011

This is a very clean but homely place to stay. I received a free upgrade to 2 bed apartment and it was very luxurious.

We stayed at the apartments from 6 August to 11 August and absolutely loved it. I was surprised to read a review saying that the Celestion is ‘no frills’ because it has no in room dining service and is nothing like the Hilton. That’s because the Hilton is a hotel and the Celestion is an apartment block. We knew this when we booked and we deliberately chose the Celestion because it offers apartments and not tiny hotel rooms.

When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised at how big the apartment actually was. There was plenty of room for two people in our one bedroom apartment. The apartment had modern yet comfortable furnishings. Our room had an almost full sized kitchen with a small dining table and lounge. There was a bedroom and a separate study which could be used to sleep an extra person. We also had two balconies.

During our entire stay (five nights) we never heard any noise from the surrounding apartments. There was a bit of noise at night from traffic but this is to be expected when staying in a CBD. The bed was huge and really comfortable.

The Indian restaurant downstairs makes amazing food for reasonable prices. We didn’t find the smell to be overpowering in the apartment lobby. In fact, we didn’t smell it at all until we actually walked into the restaurant. The restaurant also offers a 10% discount to anyone staying at the Celestion which was nice.

Overall, we loved the apartments and couldn’t believe how lucky we were to have found such a perfect place. The staff on the 24hour reception were friendly and very helpful. We would definitely stay again if we go back to Auckland.

The premise itself is in reasonable condition, doesn't go for traditional grandiose type of decor, rather simplistic and hip. We didn't see any concierge service at the lobby when we checked in, so we helped ourselves with the luggage which was fine.

The room itself is spacious and clean, very much what you expect from a clean service apartment with full kitchenette, bathroom was clean and newly decorated, but the shower is not quite powerful enough, but if you aren't too fussy, it should be ok.

Location of the hotel is fine, few blocks away from the downtown area, a 24-hrs supermarket nearby. There is carpark right at the basement level, but there are only 12 spots, so if you didn't book in advanced like us, you would have to park to a nearby discounted parking which is 5 mins. walk from the premise.

The most annoying part during our stay was the central a/c in the room was just way too cold, the a/c in the living room is a separate one, so you can't control the temp inside the room. First night we stay there I could hardly sleep because it was too cold. Then the next day I asked for extra blanket at the reception but they said they all ran out (?!). Although they did promise to give us one when "available. With little hope in mind, we had to turned up the a/c in the living room to the max to heat up the bedroom. Fortunately, my hubby found a way to turn the ventilation on the ceiling away so i was able to sleep.

Not sure if this is the norm in hotels in Auckland, but I find this hotel as "minimalistic" at best. If this is being as the no.4 best hotel in the CBD of Auckland, I'd be interested to see what no. 1 could offer.

Room Tip: Bring your own shampoo, tooth brush; ask for carpark downstair in advanced

Well-located hotel with very clean comfortable spacious apartment-style rooms. We booked a 1-BR and got an executive 1-BR, which unfortunately meant what was meant to be a very large sunny lounge room was configured into a medium-ish dark lounge room and a sunny (unused) small office w/sofa, which would probably work well for larger group than ours. We nonetheless spent a very happy comfortable 3 nights here, and would recommend the Celestion to others and stay here again. Everything looked new, and the bronze leather sofa and other furnishings were cute. The Tampopo noodle cafe 2 doors down was a wonderful quick casual lunch (although we did end up falling in love with the dumplings at the Chinese stall at the entrance to Food Alley), and I highly recommend the quirky gift shop just next door to the Celestion; I think it's called the Mini-Convenient Spot. It's a narrow deep shop with a surprisingly broad range of good souvenirs at excellent prices, and was run by a pleasant if taciturn Japanese-NZ man. If you plan to use the kitchen, there is a full-sized supermarket 2 blocks away on the harbourfront, from where we stocked up on terrific NZ cheese and fruit for breakfast.

We have a wonderful stay at the Waldorf Celestion although it is a little off the main shopping area. About a 10-15 mins walk from Queen Street. The 24 hours Countdown round the corner is a plus.

We stayed in a 2 bed-room apartment which is well kept and very clean. Bed and the sofa is so comfy we fell asleep almost instantly!

The hotel offers a taxi-service to the airport at NZD45 a trip which is not too bad, but if you happen to take a cab on your own anywhere else around town or from the airport, you might want to check with the driver if he is willing to come pick you up and head to the airport at a lower price. We had a driver offer us NZD 40. The airport bus service is at NZD 20 per pax so it might be more worth to catch a cab if you are traveling in a pair/group.

I spent two nights in this apartment hotel.

The apartments are very clean, and spacious and furnished with modern furniture.
They were very helpful at the reception.
The location of the hotel is good, walking distance from the harbour and ciy center.

Note, if you need car parking, that is located in 5 minutes of walk away.

Highly recommended.

A very nice apartment hotel in many ways. It is close to the downtown and quite a few good restaurants recommended in Tripadvisor. Parking is off the hotel but within walking distance and costs NZ$16 a day. David in the front desk was so helpful and informative. We definitely will stay again for our next visit.
