Karangahape Road, for those who don't know the area, is still old Auckland, a bit scruffy, retro, low rise,a little bit diverse, bohemia meets trailer trash, strip clubs, sex shops, nightclubs, various Asian food establishments, are all here fighting for your business.
In the midst of this is Coco's Cantina, a modestly funky outfit, selling really lovely kai (food) at, I thought, quite reasonable prices. The cocktails are really strong, so they don't skimp on their measures either, my margaritas were the strongest I've ever had, so you've been warned.
The place is steeped in atmosphere, handwritten menus, modest vases of wild flowers on each table, the lighting gets dimmer as the evening progresses, and the crowd gets noisier.
You can't book and it's really popular, so we got there at 6pm on a Friday night, got a table, and it filled pretty quickly after that. Not an easy area to find parking, so I'd recommend taking a taxi and then you don't have to wonder down dark side streets afterwards...
