Karangahape Road, for those who don't know the area, is still old Auckland, a bit scruffy, retro, low rise,a little bit diverse, bohemia meets trailer trash, strip clubs, sex shops, nightclubs, various Asian food establishments, are all here fighting for your business.

In the midst of this is Coco's Cantina, a modestly funky outfit, selling really lovely kai (food) at, I thought, quite reasonable prices. The cocktails are really strong, so they don't skimp on their measures either, my margaritas were the strongest I've ever had, so you've been warned.

The place is steeped in atmosphere, handwritten menus, modest vases of wild flowers on each table, the lighting gets dimmer as the evening progresses, and the crowd gets noisier.

You can't book and it's really popular, so we got there at 6pm on a Friday night, got a table, and it filled pretty quickly after that. Not an easy area to find parking, so I'd recommend taking a taxi and then you don't have to wonder down dark side streets afterwards...

I love this place. It is vibrant, loud, relaxed and the food is good. Perfect if you want to be able to gossip and guffaw without feeling self conscious and it's one of those places you walk into and feel a bit more alive as soon as you do. Food is always good - neighborhood bistro standard - and you will not go hungry. I've been three times lately and never waited longer than 10 mins or so for a table which is almost disappointing cos I'd like to have a chance to stand at the bar for longer - it's the kind of place you could make new friends if you hung around for an hour. Keep doing what your doing Cocos because it is fabulous.

A great little restaurant on K Road that draws a full and interesting crowd.
We visited on a Saturday and waited about 45 mins, but that was fine as the bar next door is cozy and friendly (same owners) with a neat bartender with the coolest hair this side of Bieber.

Food was very nice, we had pork belly and pasta. Service was excellent.

Recommended. Go here if you want something different as the sharp end of K' Road

This little place on K Road oozes personality. The decor inside has been thought out in great detail, from the chalkboard waiting list on a door to the handwritten menu. The place is dimly lit with a cheerful playlist, adding to the "funky" vibe. Not only was everything we ordered fabulous (try the polenta chips), the wonderful staff lifted the whole experience. When we arrived all of the tables were occupied (they don't take bookings) but we were added to the waiting list on the wall and before we even finished a drink at the bar, we were seated. They also have an extensive wine list which the bar staff are well clued-up on, so if you need help deciding they are more than happy to make a recommendation. I can't emphasise enough how impressed I was with the friendly, efficient service.

Coco's Cantina is an awesome experience, but isn't for everyone. Keep this in mind if you aren't down for a wait to be seated, don't like the odd noisy neighbouring table, or can't handle a delay. But this place is not to be missed if you want dinner out at a place different from the usual Auckland eateries, you will not be disappointed.

Coco's Cantina doesn't take bookings. You turn up, and wait. Even on a wet tuesday night they are crowded simply because the food is that good. The wait, which even for a table of 14 was only 30 minutes is worth it. The bar has an ecclectic look, but the drinks are served quickly and professionally, and you can snack on entrees while standing at the bar soaking up the atmospere. The entrees are all freshly cooked and delicious. The table service was excellent by a waitress who was only on her second day but knew every itme on the menu. The wine ranges into the unexpected and the Italian and French varietals offered are excellent, particularly the French Syrah dominant Cote du Rhone. I highly recommend the "Fish of the day" which was cardinal and was cooked absolutely superbly; in fact I've never has fish that light and fluffy before. The desserts were excellent. I recommend the affogato (Icecream and coffee but all the desserts served to our table were raved about). Not cheap but well worth the cost
