The ferry's not cheap but it is a good ride on a nice day then it's an easy hike to the top of Mt Victoria for a fabulous view of Auckland and surrounds. Don't overlook the painted mushrooms. There are some interesting restaurants along the way, though some are pricey (we lucked out with a special at the Esplanade Hotel) but if you plan ahead and the weather's right, you'll find room and a view at the summit.

The short ferry trip is enjoyable but this small town has lost it unique feel about it . Many a coffee shop to chose a light meal from Found the public toilets needed to be upgraded.

Just a lovely village with great views back to Auckland city (especially beautiful at night). Mix of interesting shops, good cafes, hotel, beach, park. Some interesting history with the Devonport Naval Base nearby. The ferry ride from Auckland city is quick but picturesque so put it on your list of must do's.

I grew up in Devonport and still like to visit. Where once it was very much a Navy town I now note it's very much more for tourist. I always go check out what Navy ships are in and the Navy Museum is well worth a visit it is a pleasant walk to the museum along the waterfront going the opposite way to the Navel Base. Great place to take children in the school holidays as they do special activities.

Went there every other year for our Wedding Anniversary, loved it! Stayed at the Hotel Esplanade, loved watching the world go by while relaxing at the hotel, or having lunch/dinner at the nearby cafes and restaurants...exceptional views of Auckland City/Harbour side views...the big liners that come in packed with tourists, container ships...Waiheke ferry trips...just so much to do and see from Devonport, its a real buzz during the month of February (usually between 15th - 19th) when the Food & Wine festival is on, lots of fun! It has a lot of history as well, colonial buildings and the Naval base is situated in Devonport and if you want to go walkabouts, there's always the walk up Mt Victoria, awesome views of Auckland and previously used as a signalling station for shipping and army bunkers back in the war days...a completely different pace to the hustle and bustle of Downtown Auckland and only 15 minutes by ferry from Downtown Auckland Ferry building. Its worth a visit!
