We had movie tickets and had 90 minutes to kill in Auckland City on a Saturday night - the weather was cold and not inviting of an "alfresco experience" so we tried "El Faro inside Elliott Stables. A communal eating hall surrounded by a number of international boutique restaurants and specialty shops.

La Faro promises in ambiance the full Spanish Tappas Experience from a set menu. The staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about each dish and its flavour profile. They were attentive, they provided advice on dishes without being pushy and they added value to a wonderful night.

We chose 6 dishes and a carafe of Sangria for starters which amazingly all landed on the table within only a few minutes. The dishes were piping hot and the presentation and aromas added to our eager anticipation to try each dish. We had patatas bravas served with a wonderfully rich dipping sauce, stuffed squid that just melted in the mouth, sweet clams, a beef dish that went down well on a cold night, moorish chicken nibbles and then stuffed dates with walnut that tasted like the Spanish equivalent to baklava. I was in heaven........................

As we weren't driving we went for a second Sangria carafe and a final tapas recommended by the waitress - a chef's special that started on bruschetta with a layer of salsa and mushrooms that really woke up my taste buds. Those dishes were deceptively filling as my waistline point out on the brief walk to the Cinema.

Whether you are into Spanish food or not El Faro is good, honest fair at a reasonable price and worth a try. Somehow I missed the Churro's on the menu so I might see you there!

Ate here a few weeks ago. Took a bit of time for staff to notice we had walked in but after that service was fine if a bit overattentive but better than being unattentive. We sat at a table inside, these are too small even for two people with a few dishes. Better to sit in the common courtyard area where tables are better sized but it was much quieter inside fi that is what you are after. Had 5 tapas plates and a pot of mussels, more that enough for two. Quality ranged from very good (mussels & ham the highlights) to average/a bit bland such as the stuffed squid, rather tasteless underseasoned stuffing. Churros to end with chocolate were excellent and worth going for on their own. Overall good experience if a bit varied, and reasonably priced especially if you go for one the deals they seem to do (we didnt). Would go again.

A few friends recommended this restaurant so we decided to try it out ourselves. Located in an area where there are a number of eateries, El Faro is located at the end of what resembles an upmarket food court. We had booked a table and on arrival to the actual restaurant was somewhat concerned about being placed just inside the door and right next to both the kitchen and the serving counter. As it was a Saturday the whole area was alive with activity and very quickly we were put at ease as far as our table was concerned. The service was outstanding with the waiting staff being attentive and efficient on every level. The open style kitchen was very small and very busy and it was really interesting watching the staff operate. Despite being very busy, the kitchen seemed to operate like clockwork. The restaurant specialises in tapas and also buckets of Mussels. We choose 5 tapas (for the 2 of us) and a bottle of Spanish Red.
Frankly both were outstanding , Great value, friendly staff, great food and a great buzz about the place makes El Faro a must return favourite!

One of the Stable complex stable El Faro is a great option. Authentic food, with a good but limited wine list, I find this a great option, particularly for a lightish lunch. I think the sangria is great. It is hard to go by the stuffed squid.
