A few friends recommended this restaurant so we decided to try it out ourselves. Located in an area where there are a number of eateries, El Faro is located at the end of what resembles an upmarket food court. We had booked a table and on arrival to the actual restaurant was somewhat concerned about being placed just inside the door and right next to both the kitchen and the serving counter. As it was a Saturday the whole area was alive with activity and very quickly we were put at ease as far as our table was concerned. The service was outstanding with the waiting staff being attentive and efficient on every level. The open style kitchen was very small and very busy and it was really interesting watching the staff operate. Despite being very busy, the kitchen seemed to operate like clockwork. The restaurant specialises in tapas and also buckets of Mussels. We choose 5 tapas (for the 2 of us) and a bottle of Spanish Red.
Frankly both were outstanding , Great value, friendly staff, great food and a great buzz about the place makes El Faro a must return favourite!

One of the Stable complex stable El Faro is a great option. Authentic food, with a good but limited wine list, I find this a great option, particularly for a lightish lunch. I think the sangria is great. It is hard to go by the stuffed squid.

Located in the lovely atmospheric Elliot Stables this restaurant was really let down by the flavours of the food. We had the tapas share menu (ten or so dishes with sangria) and, honestly, I've had much better Spanish food in dozens of other restaurants. From the look of the menu, the food "should" be exciting but most of it came out under-seasoned and lacking in any vibrancy. The exceptions were the mussels and clams - they were fresh and perfectly cooked. But the the beef ribs, the potatoes and even the parma ham was kind of limp and uninspiring. And, on the topic of parma ham, while I get that tapas dishes are small and are to be shared a little more thought could have gone into a dish that was designed for six people to share but only consisted of two slices of bread topped with ham! The waitress was friendly and obliging but her service couldn't really make up for the blah-ness of the food. It's a pity because with such a nice location this place could be great.

Hi thanks for your review I’m sorry to hear that you found the food under seasoned it is always hard to get this right as one man’s under seasoned is another’s over so we always err on the side of caution.
The ribs that are free range Tamworth pork, not beef as you have stated they are slow cooked with wild trumpets Morels & chanterelles along with rosemary and a whole 750ml bottle of Amontillado sherry from Jerez.
We do not serve Parma ham or plates of Jamon so I guess you are referring to Pintxos De Jamon. The pintxos are not designed for 6 people, No tapa in the world would serve 6 people. the pintxos come with 2 pieces per plate topped with garlic, olive oil and Jamon Serrano produced by Betica meats a 5th generation family farm it is then finished with fresh young cheese that has garlic, lemon & parsley, topped with a caper berry.
I would have thought with your well traveled impeccable knowledge of Spanish cuisine you may have picked up on the large difference in flavor between Parma ham & Jamon Serrano.
Please feel free to pop in next time you visit Auckland to receive a complementary meal and a chat.

I tried the mussels' pot and had the churros as a dessert!
They really deserve a try!
The mussels are well cooked, soft and tasty. The churros are really addictive...

We're a Belgian couple, a country famous for its mussels and chips. El Faro's are great, wonderful! We ate the whole lot and we weren't even that hungry. It was just way too delicious.
And the place is so cosy too.
The chef came over to give us tips on where to travel in NZ.
This restaurant is a guarantee for a great evening.
