Description: Nestled on the shores of the upper Waitemata, The Riverhead is steeped in local history and was a vital part of the development of early New Zealand. Prior to The Riverhead being built on this site, Thomas Deacon, the original owner, owned a pub on the point just below where The Riverhead now stands. The early Maori used this landing point as the place to disembark and portage their waka across land to the Kumeu River to get easier access to the lands in the Far North. Early immigrants then used this same route to travel north, disembarking at Helensville and continuing by ship north via the Kaipara Harbour.

I took my husband to dinner here for Valentines. The atmosphere is lovely with views onto the river. The food was wonderful and of decent proportions (check out their website for prices and options). The staff are very attentive and polite. If it is not cold it is well worth booking a table outside. The drive out there is great, nice countryside views. Not just your average country tavern!

Where has this place been hiding? We went unplanned on a sunny Saturday evening. They fitted us in and the views across the estuary through mature trees are really great. They had dishes to cater for both Vegetarian and Gluten free diets. We enjoyed our meal and will be back with some more family or friends at another time.

My wife had been here previously to lunch with friends and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. This was our wedding anniversary and the evening was great. The owners have done a great make-over on the decor (as this is a historic tavern and therefore not the original) and it is very tastefully done. It has a kind of cosy/modern/rustic feel to it. The staff were all very helpful and friendly and the food was superb. I notice another reviewer says the portions were big, and I beg to disagree, as this gives the impression that the plates are heaped and suitable for gluttons. That is not the case in that the meals we had were a quite adequate and well presented in a very tasteful way (excuse the pun). We will be back. A BIG thanks to the owners and all the staff who make these occasions memorable.

Awesome restaurant & boathouse! Beautiful menu and staff were very pleasant. We took the red boat from Auckland, 1 1/2 hour cruise to the Riverhead Tavern wharf. Such a lovely setting and obviously very popular as it was busy! Will definitely be returning there and bring more friends so they can experience this for themselves.
