“The kids love this adventure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2013

We really enjoy taking a step back in time, the children love this place, the themed days they have had in the past are great, it is a little off the beaten track, once you head towards glenbrook off the southern motorway it is sign posted. worth a trip for a fun ride if you love trains or love historical adventures. A great day had by all

“Steam train ride in a rural scenery near Auckland”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2013

As the result of dedicated hard work of volunteers, they (the volunteer club) can keep this steam trains running every weeks. Two thumbs up.
A really relax and enjoyable trip for the whole families, a picnic trip while the train enthusiasts and children can see a really old big steam engine in pristine running condition puffing old refurbished carriages behind her. Some are open wagons.
The ride start at Glenbrook and ends at Waiuku, a small rural city, approx 7km apart. At special times this volunteer club run a special "Thomas the Tank Engine" theme which attract nearly more than a thousand visitors for these special weekends.
At the middle of the route the train will stop at Pukeoware to allow passengers to visit their depot and workshop. A collection of steam engines and diesel locomotives are waiting to be refurbished by dedicated train buffs volunteers. Also a fleet of old wagons kept here.
Passengers can see also the water refill actions on the way back from Waiuku.
This ride is the only regular weekly steam rides in Auckland area, approx. 60-65 km distance from city centre. The train ride takes 30-45 min one way, or 1.5 hours return, but with relax and short walks at Waiuku, and catch the next return trip, the whole trip can be finished in approx. 3 hours. Cafe and food are available at starting station, Glenbrook, or visit cafes or food shop at Waikuku centre. Not only the train ride, a mechanical jigger ride is also available for a dollar.
For train enthusiasts, a train book and memorabilia shop is opened at Glenbrook Station.
On the negative side, no public transport available to reach this location, so you absolutely need private car or bus to visit this site.

A fabulous resurrection of a well preserved means of transport, with enthusiast staff dressed in traditional uniforms, keeping their guests well briefed.

“Great day out for kids”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2013

This is a great place to take young kids, particularly boys who love Thomas the Tank Engine. Beautifully restored and maintained steam engines by dedicated volunteers. You get to go on the train and there is a little old fashioned cafe in on the station platform (run by volunteers and sells simple sandwices and cakes). It is usually in the Auckland Entertainment book as well so you can get a discount on your admission
