If you love the good old steam trains you will be in for a treat. The trip is good value for money and it is fun.

Great day out - low impact suitable for the elderly and the kids. It is seasonal though, they run approx end October to beginning June, check their website for details. Nice little tea/coffee shop.

Great to see the old engines and rolling stock from yesteryear. It is a shame that more were not kept for posterity. The collection is not enormous by overseas standards, Kids love it, and I am told that they rerlly love the special weekends when Thomas the Tank Engine is thre.

45 minutes drive from central Auckland on a weekend. We turned up on Mother's day to find that Mums got a free ride on the train. What a nice thought. At the stations there were three lovely ladies playing wartime music on accordians which went well with the enjoyment of a steam train ride. A lot of effort has been put in by the enthusiasts to make the visit enjoyable.

Tips: Check timetables and ensure you go on a day when the steam trains are running. It is an approximately 1hr round trip stopping at Waiuku for 10 minutes and the railway yard for 10 mins. We would have stopped in Waiuku and caught the next train back but hadn't planned our day well enough.
Visit the website - all the information is there
There is a small cafe serving tea, filter coffee, ice creams, sandwiches, cakes etc and soft drinks but the choice is limited. There is a nice outside picnic area
Great for children. There is also an animal park within walking distance. The entry charge on the day was $20 for 2 adults and 2 children. Have also been there previously when they've offered pony rides.

It was an amazing venture out of the city. The authenticity was on the spot, even the conductors looked and were dressed as if they walk out of a 1900's set. The operation is well run, and very family friendly. It is definitely worth a trip if you have any interest in steam locomotives, and trains in general. Its great to have people with passion for these soon-to-be-extinct features of the days gone by, giving their volentary time fo rthe cause. Make a day of it!
