A little outside the city, a quick bus ride. Near many restaurants and coffee shops. Nice lounge and kitchen area. The rooms, showers/bathrooms clean. Would recommend for travelers. No free internet.

I arrived at Verandahs early in the morning at around 0740am fresh off a flight from LA. And despite the fact that the host Campbell wasn't supposed to be there until 8am. He came immediately to the backpackers to meet me when I called him.

I was very impressed from the start to the attention to detail paid to guests. Campbell give a very detailed guided tour of both houses and all facilities. He was also very helpful when it came to local advice on where to go and what to do.

I was staying at house number 4 in a 4 bed shared room. Thankfully no bunks here. The room was very clean and tastefully decorated inside. The bathrooms were also spotless with great showers.

All communal areas were also kept very clean. The kitchen was well equipped and a good place to meet other guests. The two living rooms were nice. One even had a piano and guitar which guests were welcome to use.

Campbell and his staff go well beyond what many backpacker places offer to make your stay a great one. This would be my first choice any time I stay in Auckland in the future. You feel so much at home in Verandahs with the bonus of a nice garden and amazing views.

We stayed in Verandahs on 4 seperate occasions and loved our experience there every time. Each time we stayed in either a 4 or 5 bed dorm which was a nice size. The beds were really comfortable and the house itself is so cosy and welcoming it felt like our second home. The kitchen area is great as well with lots of facilities and also 2 spacious lounge areas and a big garden for reading and relaxing in. The location was great as you could walk into town within 30 minutes and Ponsonby itself is a lovely area with a huge selection of restauarants and cafes. It seemed like a lot of people staying here were there for the long term and we could completely understand why.

The place consists of 2 separate houses. Both of them decorated in a sober good taste way. The feeling of the place is very relaxed and friendly. Kitchen facilities are higher than standard, we even baked brownies! The garden is beautiful and also the view. It is at the edge of downtown, which is good if you drive a car or want to get away of the buzz. I think the fact that there is no TV helps the social scene. We even played domino.. the place is excellent value for money and the owner/manager is a very nice guy.

Room Tip: The house where the kitchen is is nicer.

While we realize that poor insulation is a problem endemic to NZ, Verandah's bathrooms (esp. the shared ones on the second floor of the main house) were *really* drafty. You get extremely cold after your shower! The rooms were unpleasantly drafty as well. As with many hostels, long-term guests are employed to clean the bedrooms, vacuum, etc., with the result being that it's not the cleanest hostel. There is a proper professional crew to clean the kitchen, but they don't seem to be at the top of their game, either, as the kitchen looked routinely grungy. There are many long-term guests who essentially live at Verandahs (for months at a time, if not longer) which has the unfortunate side-effect of a clique-ish social dynamic. We felt like outsiders. (Having one of the long-term guests ask us to stop using the kitchen while she taught her yoga class (which she opted to hold in the lounge immediately adjacent to the kitchen during dinner time) didn't help.)

Thank you for your review. I feel it is warranted to reply to your criticisms. We take great effort in trying to ensure our premises are kept clean and comfortable. It is disappointing that during your stay , we did not meet your high standards. We did have an issue with our commercial cleanners and we have working with their managers to ensure this does not happen again. With regards to the backpackers cleaning the rooms, this is common within the industry and usually we get it right. It is disappointing that you did not give us the courtesy at the time to speak to us directly. We could have discussed the issue with the cleaner. Some 7 months later, does not help us and the cleaners have now moved on. We do not have heaters in showers and in October I do not understand why you would need one. This is a 1900 Villa, it will breath, that is healthy. At least we have windows in our rooms to look out. With regards to the long termers, 8 out of a maximum 48 persons is not much. They have always been very sociable and respectful to other guests and I would guarantee you, there would have been short staying guests enjoying themselves with them while you were there. Maybe one should look at themselves first.
Yoga was put on for all guests and it was a success. Signs were displayed saying this . It was inclusive . We have two lounges and a large kitchen, Yoga classes were always around 5pm for one hour. I do not consider this a major inconvenient. If I sound slightly annoyed, it is because I am as I care about my business. Thank you.
