“Peace and quiet at Maketu”
Reviewed October 13, 2008

This was an idyllic situation - peace and quiet with a wonderful view. We rented the self-catering accommodation for 5 nights and it was ideal. Tricia left us to our own devices as we were self catering but gave us some very helpful hints for our days out. We spent a wonderful evening, with another couple who were staying with Tricia, at the local Rotary Club with dinner and a most interesting talk - Tricia is a member. Don't miss out on sampling the Maketu pies (made locally!)

Stayed November 2006

We were expecting a great experience at this B&B.

Tricia seemed friendly in her email, but when we arrived, she put us down quite a bit. Perhaps she doesn't like Americans. We did not feel comfortable there at all but did not base our New Zealand vacation on a one night experience. We stayed in many B&Bs in New Zealand and overall the Kiwis are very friendly.

She didn't seem to like our travel plans when we asked for advice, which is ok, except the way she talked to us was very demeaning.

Our room was in the main house. It was ok, not large, but clean and decorated nicely.

After 7 weeks of travelling in Australia and New Zealand we spent a night in the multicultural village of Maketu Beach, about an hour's drive north of Rotorua. Tricia welcomed us to the Blue Tides B&B by offering us tea and homemade shortbreads on the balcony overlooking the ocean. The home looks down on the inlet of the river that empties into the Bay of Plenty. Mount Maunganui rises in front of us as we sit and watch the local children swimming on the beach. Tricia made reservations for dinner for us at the local restaurant just down the road which was right on the water. Breakfast was set on white linen tablecloth in the dining room. We started with homemade museli with passion fruit and stewed Granny Smith apples, OJ and tea or coffee. There was homemade kiwi and ginger jam or marmalade on the table, ready for the toast Tricia brought in. The hot breakfast was eggs, bacon and cooked cherry tomatoes. It was all wonderful. The two other couples staying at the B&B were great company and Tricia made us feel right at home. If you are interested in Maori history ask Tricia for more information. It was nicely appointed and great accomodation. A real treat for a weary traveller.
