Its a long long drive to Cape Reinga - i think it felt longer ( we came from Paihia) because once we left Kaitaia we saw hardly any traffic. There are some amazing views along the way though. Do ring food and drinks with you, because there isn't anyway at the Cape to buy anything.

The Cape itself is great to see, however, we drove down to the nearby beach and camping area and that was one our highlights. We had our picnic lunch there, and there were a few other people doing the same as us. Well worth a visit. If you have a camper van or tent, then definitely stay a night or two. There are some really good walks nearby as well.

we extended our holiday by a day to visit the Cape, so worth it, seeing the meeting of the oceans, the lighthouse, and a beautiful piece of New Zealand, go to the cape just don't stand at the top of the hill.

Went on an absolutely dreadful day. Rain, clouds and everything was so gloomy. Despite of the horrible weather, Cape Reinga still looked amazing. If it's raining on the day you intend to go and absolutely cannot reschedule the visit, just go ahead as it still looks quite amazing. No blue skies but still very pretty. There are quite a number of walks that you could do around the area that would should be pretty amazing. If you intend to just go to the lighthouse, take photos and head back, you could give youself 45 minutes. I would highly suggest giving 2-3 hours so that you can take your time to appreciate the scenery.

You could either self drive there via SH 1 or take a tour bus that would go along the 90 mile beach.

We drove for what seemed eternity...it is a long drive, because there is very little or virtually no habitation, it is also a lonely drive. Would recommend organising a group or going by coach, just to break the monotony of the miles you need to travel to visit this truly remarkable spot. It really does have a surreal element to it...the mist rises over the sea swept cliffs and captivates you. Bare banks of sparse vegetation allow you to take in the view that simply takes your breath away.

The road to Cape Reinga is now sealed and when you arrive at this destination you'll see why I have named this place as a must see.
A 1/2 hour stroll to the light house will amaze you with the wonderful view of the top of the north Island to the right you see Spirit Bay where it is believed to be where the spirit's depart Aotearoa and to the left Cape Maria van Diemen.
It's a very popular place for the tourist of all ages and all over the world.
