A Hindu monk once left the shores of India and founded the concept of Annalakshmi - The Indian Vegetarian Restaurant, in Malaysia. From Malaysia, the concept of serving humanity through the arts spread to neighbouring Australia. Here on the banks of the Swan, Annalakshmi has found a new abode to serve the community.

The community cooks the meals and you basically donate what you deem is a fair price for the vegetarian Indian food you ate. It is a win win for your tummy and your soul.

Luckily this is a pay what you wish because they must be afraid to put a price on mediocraty. It is not fine dining in any way. The set up is completely open and many of the tables are simply draped with cloth and surrounded by well worn uncomfortable chairs.

It was rice, dal and aloo gobi with nan doled out a small square at a time. The beverages were water and watery orange something or other.

Save your money, no matter how little, and go to somewhere....anywhere else and have a decent meal.

Give this place a pass!

Since arriving in Perth 6 months ago I have been desperate to try Annalakshmi however, I'm not the kind of person to inflict a completely vegetarian meal on meat eating friends unless they're wiling. We finaly had the opportunity to visit on Wednesday. We arrived early to avoid the queues and crowds (this is advicsable as from 7 onwards it filled up very rapidly).

The concept is great although it had a cafeteria feel inside which doesn't match their advertised "vegetarian fine diining". There was a good atmosphere inside and a very eclectic range of customers from backpackers to families to business suits.

I happily tried a bit of everything on offer and whilst some of it was quite good the majority was either bland or completely over salted. It was such a shame as I had such high expectations of this place.

As it was pay what you feel we weren't especially generous as it was a disappointing meal. I will re-visit as I still really want this place to be good. Perhaps it was just a bad night or maybe someone got carried away with the salt? Hopefully next time it will be better.

We were invited to a lunch party by some friends. Annalakshmi is always a wonderful place to visit. It's uniqueness lies in the fact that it is pure vegetarian, no alcoholic drinks and totally run by volunteers, most of who are professionals but they contribute their time as "seva". The food has a home-cooked taste. You may not get many varieties(understandable), but it is unlimited. Also, they always request you to help yourself to as much as you want but not waste any of it. What's more, you pay as you feel. We try to be as fair as we can!!! They also carry out a lot of cultural activities. The best thing about Annalakshmi? It's fantastic location. I'd suggest you always choose lunch over dinner so you get the magnificent view of the Swan River in daylight. A lift is provided so it's convenient for those who can't take the stairs. Summers are better because you may have to park a bit away and it could be annoying to walk up to the restaurant in the rain!!!! All in all, a wonderful experience!!!!
