The Karalee On Preston is in a wonderful location with a large nicely furnished eating area which operates adjacent to its bar area. It is located in Como about a 5 minute drive from central Perth and in a fairly upper middle class leafy area about a kilometre from Perth Zoo along Labouchere Road. It has wonderful river views of the Swan from the eating area and a reasonably good menu to choose from. There were 4 of us and most of the meal was disappointing and all plates went back to the scullery half eaten. A chicken parmigana was about 20 cm square and must have come from an ostrich. More is not necessarily better and it was either from an old boiler or a forcemeat mockup. The tomato topping was canned (or tasted so) and the feathery taste of the ''chicken'' lingered for hours. The Quin-hua salad with fish was topped with distinctively cheap Basa type fillets and the fishy smell made the meal almost inedible. This is a restaurant with a usually good reputation and for close to A$140.00 for 4 mains and bread plus drinks at lunchtime was a great let down. The grilled fish came out steamed and slimy and the staff were very cordial in taking it back and grilling it but unfortunately the damage had been done. We finished up leaving and had our cappuccinos and desert at another establishment. The drinks bought seperately were a wonderful choice of a great selection of local & international beers and a bar priced selection of West Australian wines. It advertises as a restaurant but there is no table service and you have to queue to order and you must approach the bar to re-order drinks. The service and politeness of the staff was great but at the prices charged (average price) was a bit high for a place with a pub nosh attitude. I am being generous at this stage by giving 3 stars based on our experience but 4 meals not enthusiastically enjoyed does not make me want to race back. The staff attitude was courteous, understanding and friendly and the drinks were a great choice. It may have been the meals ordered and being lunch instead of dinner but I won't be hurrying back!
