“Not impressed by Governor Robinsons”

Although the hostel was spotlessly clean and situated in a lovely old house complex with a nice laundry and good facilities in the kitchen/eating area, I found my en suite room @ $70 Aus per night for single occupancy very basic with minimum furniture - nowhere to hang anything - and when i asked for a towel, I was told I would have to buy one - having paid for an en suite i would have expected this to be provided.

  • Liked — cleanliness
  • Disliked — room very basic
  • Tips/Secrets — ok if you want to be in a quiet location and not too far from amenities

Governor Robinsons is a hostel that appears good on the surface but has a few problems that causes it not to be good value for money and quite honestly, overpriced!

The hostel I think would suite a more mature crowd. It is very quiet and lacks in atmosphere meaning that there is little to do in the evening. There is no TV room and has limited eating and social space.

The showers flood badly causing water to spill all over the bathroom floors.

In the middle of summer, when temperatures are pushing over 30 degrees regularly, your air conditioning is set at a warm temperature, only coming on in the evening. With the six bed dorms being as cramped as they are, it can get quite sweaty!

The owner seems slightly intense and can be quite hard to approach during busy times. I booked my accommodation a month in advance with him directly, as I anticipated a busy period coming up. When I arrived and the hostel was fully booked, I was told I had to swap rooms on a nightly basis. When I asked why I was told I was lucky to even have a bed!

The fridge in the kitchen is too small and the kitchen itself severely lacks in utensils.

Also there was a burglary one night with things being stolen from the dorms, however this was just laughed off by management in the morning and they failed to contact the police.

Aesthetically it is a very nice hostel, but don't ignore the underlying problems!

This place was a welcome site when we first arrived as we had come from a nearby competitor whereby we had checked in and then checked straight out because it was so disgusting.

GR looked the part when we arrived, very clean and tidy and with fantastic old furniture and high ceilings - it reminded us very much of the fantastic backpackers you find almost everywhere in New Zealand.

The problems arose when we discovered how small the dorms were. They really really pack them in like sardines and 6 bed dorms really ought to be 4 bed dorms. Couple this with the fact that they really scrimp on air conditioning and ration the temperature and time that you can have it on, it really can be very uncomfortable.

The place is nice but has no TV. This doesn't sound too bad, but it does get incredibly boring here without it! It is a very quiet hostel and if you're looking for a party, look elsewhere. I would even say that it is more for the older traveller and by old I mean the 45 - 65 bracket.

The owner of the hostel can be a nice guy but can be extemely unhelpful in certain circumstances. For instance, the last few days many travellers have been turned away simply because bookings cannot be honored that were made via a popular backpackers website. This is no ones fault but his for not informing them that he is full.

All in all, i would probably not stay here again.

We stayed @ Robinson at the end of our WA trip. We booked a dbl ensuite but on arrival they only had a dbl shared available. Which was a shame. Fortunately the bathroom was next to the room and shared with few other rooms. The hostel itself is peacefull (No TV!) and the amenities are quite new . The bathrooms are spacious and well equiped but the flooring is faulty which results in lots of ponds appearing after someone had a shower which can be annoying if you wanna go to the toilet without gettin your feet or pants for that matter wet. That, with the scantily used aircon, is the only downside of this hostel. It being in the asian part of Northbridge means plenty of asian restaurants around (in different qualitys). The Indian restaurant just around the corner is an absolute must!
