“Disappointing for the Tariff Charged”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2013

Unable to book our preferred accommodation, my wife and I stayed the Saturday night of a holiday weekend. At $176 for a double room, excluding breakfast, the tariff seemed on the high side, though Wi-Fi was inclusive and a swimming pool was available on the first floor.

The male receptionist was polite and he quickly confirmed our booking. Passing the backpackers in the small bar, we walked towards the small lift on our way to our room on the fourth floor. On first impressions, the room seemed spacious enough. It came with what we thought (at first!) was a bonus; a small balcony offering views of the city. However, when we went to bed it quickly became obvious that it was no bonus at all - the glass doors to the balcony were not double-glazed and traffic noise from the busy road below disrupted our sleep.

The writing desk below the mirror sported a "wonky" leg and since there was no reading lamp, we decided not to chance our luck in case it collapsed. We found too that while the Wi-Fi was free, the speed was so low (26Kb/s to 36Kb/s) that it was useless. On the other hand, the LCD TV worked well for the local digital channels though there were no Pay-TV nor satellite options. The air conditioner seemed ancient and forbidding; fortunately for us, the room temperature was about right and we didn't have to do battle with the thing.

Sadly, the ensuite was very dated and a little dirty. There was grime around the hand-basin taps and mold in the grout of the lower tiles of the shower. The shower was of the plastic curtain variety and steam quickly obscured all visibility in the ensuite as the exhaust fan didn't work.

Being a little dispirited and against our better judgement we decided to try the hotel restaurant for our dinner. We were pleasantly surprised, as prices were reasonable and serving sizes were generous. Drinks pricing too was reasonable. However, after a poor night's sleep, in the morning we decided to forego the buffet (cold) breakfast at $15 each and take the free (council) bus into the city and try our luck there!

In summing up: our room definitely needed a thoroughly good clean if not a total refurbishment. This hotel charged us a premium rate for what was essentially budget accommodation. We found that their Sunday night rate at $91/double was a more realistic price and had we paid this, we would have accepted this hotel on its merits - such as they were. Overall, the many minuses outweighed the few positives and we left feeling ripped off. No, we didn't try the pool and we won't return.

Room Tip: Front rooms are susceptible to traffic noise.

Our room was a good size, well furnished and very clean. Just what we wanted for a short city break to Perth. We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel and we thought the meals were of a good standard. The staff were very helpful both in the dining area and reception. The parking on site was free as was the wi fi which could be accessed from your room as well as the public areas. There was also a bus stop outside the hotel allowing free transport into the city centre which was very convenient. The cost was very reasonable for a hotel of this standard.

Room Tip: Rooms are quieter at the rear of the hotel.

We were disappointed with Sullivans after all the good reviews. The staff were not helpful at all, our room was very small and in need of a renovation and a good clean. There were dirty tissues on the floor when we arrived. We asked the staff for an iron but you have to use the communal laundry. It is only 20 mins walk to the city which is good for location. It is also right next to Kings Park but there is actually a giant cliff face to get there, so you have to walk quite a way to get access to the park. You had to pay extra for breakfast and it looks ordinary. We won't be going there again.

This was my 2nd visit to Sullivans (years apart). Whilst the hotel hasn't changed much, everything was clean & comfortable. The staff were very friendly & helpful, able to offer advice re public transport / distances in the area. The location is very convenient - 10 mins walk to the ferry terminal (great spot to get to Rottnest Ferry) through parks & along the water. I didn't eat at the hotel, but the menu looked good & reasonably priced. Overall, great value for money in comparison to other hotels in the area & the staff made the stay even better.

Although the rooms were a little dated they had everything you needed (oh, except for an iron) and were clean and tidy. The service I received from staff more than made up for any shortfalls in the room though ... all of the staff I came across were extremely friendly and helpful ... they really couldn't do enough for you. I would definitely stay at Sullivans again because of this and the very reasonable prices they offer in comparison to other hotels in the CBD. The free CAT bus service right outside the front of the hotel which takes you into the city centre was also very handy and regular. Otherwise walking takes approx. 15 mins.

Friendly staff.
Pleasant lobby and dining area, though small.
A 10 minute walk to the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre.
Standard room was small and basic. Bathroom only had a shower and was also very small. Amenities were very basic. Both the room and bathroom in need of refurbishment.
The nearby road is quite busy and noisy so that windows have to be kept closed at night.
Free wifi a great bonus.
Overall reasonably good value. Would stay again if on a budget.

We stayed at The Sullivans Hotel for four days. It’s located on Mounts Bay Road right behind Kings Park and approx 15-20 minutes walk into Perth’s CBD. The free Cat Bus stops right outside the hotel which is really handy if you don’t fancy the walk into town. The double room we were allocated was on the 1st floor, first right through the main doors and was a bit cramped. The room’s retro Air Con unit looked like something from the 1950’s. The directional vents on the unit were broken but the unit didn’t kick out any cold air anyway. It was extremely noisy so we had it turned off most of the time. Not much use in the heat of Perth in December! We had a cooked breakfast on the last morning. This was fine, no complaints. Overall I would say for the money there are more modern Hotels at a similar price or cheaper in Perth to try. The staff were helpful and friendly. The big plus is the free Wi-Fi, but don’t let that alone be the deciding factor. You can get free Wi-Fi in the central shopping area of Perth’s CBD and in a variety of Pubs, Bars and Restaurants these days.
