Unable to book our preferred accommodation, my wife and I stayed the Saturday night of a holiday weekend. At $176 for a double room, excluding breakfast, the tariff seemed on the high side, though Wi-Fi was inclusive and a swimming pool was available on the first floor.
The male receptionist was polite and he quickly confirmed our booking. Passing the backpackers in the small bar, we walked towards the small lift on our way to our room on the fourth floor. On first impressions, the room seemed spacious enough. It came with what we thought (at first!) was a bonus; a small balcony offering views of the city. However, when we went to bed it quickly became obvious that it was no bonus at all - the glass doors to the balcony were not double-glazed and traffic noise from the busy road below disrupted our sleep.
The writing desk below the mirror sported a "wonky" leg and since there was no reading lamp, we decided not to chance our luck in case it collapsed. We found too that while the Wi-Fi was free, the speed was so low (26Kb/s to 36Kb/s) that it was useless. On the other hand, the LCD TV worked well for the local digital channels though there were no Pay-TV nor satellite options. The air conditioner seemed ancient and forbidding; fortunately for us, the room temperature was about right and we didn't have to do battle with the thing.
Sadly, the ensuite was very dated and a little dirty. There was grime around the hand-basin taps and mold in the grout of the lower tiles of the shower. The shower was of the plastic curtain variety and steam quickly obscured all visibility in the ensuite as the exhaust fan didn't work.
Being a little dispirited and against our better judgement we decided to try the hotel restaurant for our dinner. We were pleasantly surprised, as prices were reasonable and serving sizes were generous. Drinks pricing too was reasonable. However, after a poor night's sleep, in the morning we decided to forego the buffet (cold) breakfast at $15 each and take the free (council) bus into the city and try our luck there!
In summing up: our room definitely needed a thoroughly good clean if not a total refurbishment. This hotel charged us a premium rate for what was essentially budget accommodation. We found that their Sunday night rate at $91/double was a more realistic price and had we paid this, we would have accepted this hotel on its merits - such as they were. Overall, the many minuses outweighed the few positives and we left feeling ripped off. No, we didn't try the pool and we won't return.
